no, branded PSU's are overrated, theres an internet cafe near USC main with 50 computers nearly on 24hours for gaming and all have generic PSUs and i have yet to see one fail due to generic PSU's

also ive got a generic PSU, does alright for my hd 4670, and ive got older computers with generic psu's that work like a charm, they have been subject to black outs and sudden shutdowns and still working like a charm

Branded PSUs fail just as bad as Generic PSU. although the wattage may not be right, most of the time its enough, unless your going crossfire or multi gpu and overclocking.

^ i beg to disagree, what? 4670? it doesn't even require a pci express power connector. now the cafe you were referring to, do they have a powerful card like the 4850 on 24 hours with a generic PSU?

I'm not saying that a card that if a card requires its own power source ra ang basehan, many things are involved but graphics cards stresses the 12volt rail, majority of your components are on the 12v rail.

in my opinion, any items on the mid-range to high-end units should get a true-rated psu, better safe than sorry. at least you'll know who you'll blame should the PSU is the cause of the problem. heck, if you're up to it and you have the proof that you need, you can even sue them.

    **EDIT**

and bro, i've worked with cafes for at least a quarter of my life. most failures are IN FACT due to the generic psu or indirectly caused by it.

for 4800 series cards it requires a PCIE power connector..

    goodluck bro.

grab a voltage multimeter and tap it to one of your molex connector if you know how to do it, to the 12V line (yelow), this only apply if your PSU has single 12v rail

    put everything under load.

see you multimeter if the voltage is stable.
i think you will get an idea if you PSU can handle it.

yeah the 4670 doesnt require an external power source and plays everything and anything pretty much on high. lol best surprise of upgrading since i didnt expect so much. also my 4670 is pretty much running without being turned off for at least 2 weeks now haha

as for generic Vs Branded PSU's its like a nike vs fake nike. both are still shoes both will get you around but one will last ONLY as good as its built. since both are made from china lol

as for internet cafe's most errors ive seen are due to virus and reformat. i have alot of cafe friends and maybe 1 or 2 fail due to PSU out of 50

also regardless of the power required by the GPU. the generic PSU is still working. and i dont think the OP will run his 4850 24hours non stop hehe

@lokster: you should read this; How Much Power Can a Generic 500 W Power Supply Really Deliver? | Hardware Secrets

ok pana sa imoha ang generic PSU karon since you're still not using it 100% and the card doesn't require much power to operate but careful with the loads now since you don't know how much power it can give you. i had an 8600GT before which is pretty much like your card (doesn't require a 6-pin PCIE connector, low powered sad) but when you start cranking up on the 12-volt rails, you risk of overloading your PSU. this is specially true for graphics card asking for 30 amps and above from the 12volt rail.

overloading comes with many risks, if it dies, it may take other components or worse you're beloved video card or processor. you might want to read the article through and through, still if we can't convince you, k lang. its your choice and its your computer.

to the thread starter, here's something to consider:

    http://ati.amd.com/products/certifie...rsupplies.html

as far as I know, the 4850 needs 18-20 amps on the 12-volt rail. Multiply the two to get the watts and you have 240 watts consumed by the graphics card alone.

@poldo, i read that article and its pretty bias, i mean there are way better made generic PSU compared to what they tested. hehe

here is a chart too of the various power usages.
