There's really no excuse for being late. If you're late then you're late. If you say traffic, then why didn't you leave for office earlier? As an employee, it's part of your job to come in on time. That means, upon leaving for work, you need to consider traffic, possible detours, road accidents. So I'd say, "there's no excuse for being late".

If you're not feeling good and thus the reason that prompted you to be late, go on sick leave instead.
