Model numbers can be confusing... you cannot really tell by the naming patterns... a little research will greatly help
while this is true with 8800GT and 9800GT, coz they are exactly the same chips... it is not the case with 8600GT and 9600GT. they have similar architecture but they are different chips. 8600GT have only 32 SPs and a 128-bit memory controller while a 9600GT has 64SP and a 256-bit memory controller, now that's a big difference...
3650 and 4670 does have a big difference. 120SPs vs 320SPs+architectural enhancments... ..
3850 and 4850 as well, 320SP to 800SP+architectural enhancments...
just beware of those model numbers... esp with nvidia..
