Thumbs up Lenovo Security Disables Notebooks through SMS

This would be a very cool feature to implement to all notebooks/laptops, read along:

Lenovo security feature leaves notebooks inoperable after receiving a special text message

It’s no fun having something that belongs to you stolen. When it’s your notebook computer, things can be even worse if you have confidential personal or business information stored on the notebook. Criminals can gain access to things like tax returns and have all the information they need to steal your identity.

This isn't new. There have been notebooks used for corporate use with remote wipe for a while now. A lot of cellphones for corporate use also have remote wipe and just recently the iPhone.

ang ako lang, hackers will always find a way to make the laptop operable again

@vern: this one does not wipe the entire drive of the notebook, it just disables it, until another special SMS is sent to the device making it operational again.

@comcam: there will always be ways and means of thwarting this kind of scheme, if a system is made by man, it's not a secure system. But until then, I hope notebook manufacturers would implement this kind of feature to all notebooks and laptops.

heard from a friend, @ NEC, once you plugged in their flash drive to your personal laptop or outside the building, automatically wiped ang data..

back to topic, this one's really neat.. But it will only lockdown the laptop, but what if i-transfer ang harddisk..? it didn't say sa report from lennovo, but i think makuha ang data after transferring.. IMHO..

I don't think so, I have read somewhere that even if you remove the HD of the notebook, you can't use it because it's fully encrypted. Unless you really want to waste your time decrypting a hard drive greater than 100GB.

usually, if a hard drive has locking mechanism then it also has encryption... if you will try to open it then it will just be random letters and numbers since you will need a decryption key for read the data properly...
