I'm not sure either, but I guess it's quite popular since it's taught to school children. =) That's how I judge if a theory is popular or not - if it's taught to kids in school.
I believe that Einstein and Newton is very much part of the topic of Big Bang cosmology. The Big Bang, after all, includes the origin of space-time.
The Big Bang theory also includes the origin of everything else, not only space-time. lol. That's probably another reason why I don't think much about it. It's too big for my wee brain. =)
(now goes off to reread about the superstring theory, reread because I still don't get it)
