So what are the criteria that makes Davao the "Best" city in the Philippines today? in terms of processing zone? Clark is #1 then Cebu has two major MEPZ. In terms of 5 star Hotels? Shangri-La Hotels has 2 in the Phils in Manila and in Cebu Marriott and Hilton and others. Major developments? infrastructures? Manila developed a lot of access toll roads as well as in Cebu there is South Reclamation Project which has a lot of potential. Biggest mall in Asia? Mall of Asia is in Manila and soon in Cebu SRP the second biggest mall in Asia will be developed. Asian Summit was held in Manila and in Cebu - why is it that these are not the point of business interest in Davao? in terms of beaches have you been to Malapascua? Badian? or maybe in Lapu-lapu Island? in terms of Foreign Direct Investments? some 500 Fortune companies has presence in Cebu and not even in Manila. Business Process Outsourcing contractors the higest numbers are in Manila and next is Cebu. In terms of Universities - Manila has the most prestigious universities the big 3 and Cebu is next to the number of universities in the Phils. There should be a clear facts why this thread is claiming Davao is the "Best" city in the Philippines.
That's a very good question and a credible citing of points, thanks. That would indeed be a challenge that Dabawenyos should answer.
This would be my contributory reply, not often one finds in the country a bustling city and having blessed with Nature's beauty that every dabawenyo should help nurture:
In Davao one finds the sanctuary for the world's rarest eagle.
In nearby Samal one finds the world's largest fruit bat population.
Drink Davao's ordinary tap water for the world's next best water.
One of only two highly urbanized places in the world to be nested by rare sea turtles, after Miami Florida.
Only in Davao Gulf was sighted the world's first live sighting of the very rare longman's beak whale; also sightings of world's largest fish the whaleshark and even killerwhales (!), attesting the rich diversity of Davao's seas.
Among the world's largest city in terms of area (this may sound cliche' but consider the big responsibility and experience of encompassing a city area more than half the size of Bohol island)
Asia's 5th best in Human Resource next only to Melbourne, Singapore, Hongkong and Taipei.
Southeast Asia's most peaceful city.
Most livable city in the country.
Most child-friendly city.
Most competitive city.
3rd in the world to implement 911 emergency hotline next to USA and Canada replete with international standard requirement ambulance, K-9, 24/7 emergency calls toll free, efficient computerized network.
Etc.
In my consideration, to be best a city needs to meet not only the needed facilities and services expected of an urban settlement, but also act as responsible stewards in protecting and nurturing the beauty of Nature in this fragile planet.
I like the Tarsiers the smallest monkey in earth and the fantastic view of the Chocolate Hills in Bohol too.
Anyway, as a tourist I choose not to drink tap water so bottled drinking water are not selling very well in Davao?
Also what interest me is how Davao are responding like the "911" in the US? do they have fire trucks and police cars and ambulance responding to any emergency too? how does Davao implemented this "911" like support to the community? do they that every unit in every barangay? are they effective to be called and can claim like a "911" network?
Also "Asia's 5th best in Human Resource next only to Melbourne, Singapore, Hongkong and Taipei." so most OFW who are in tech or medical fields are from Davao and the domestic helpers, seamen and carpenters from from the other cities? how do you quantify this claim that people from Davao are Asia's 5th best in Human Resource but not the rest of the professional people from other cities in the Philippines?
