Question US istoryans, pls comment about Torrent

Good day fellow istoryans. Kani para ni sa naa sa states. Are you guys using torrent for downloading movies? My gf is in LA and she's been using torrent for quite sometime now. Just recently her friend warned her about using torrent kay somewhat illegal daw and might put her in trouble if she keeps using it. Is it true? I know strict ang policy diha sa states esp. with piracy but is she at greater risk nga downloader mn xa and not the uploader who usually are the ones violating the piracy and copyright

downloading.....is still considered piracy, it holds true if you didn't purchase the media that you are downloading.

the downloader is as guilty as the uploader if it's a copyrighted material. i've read people get arrested over illegal downloads of music files. torrent is also detectable by the ISP and some employ throttling. at any rate, tell your gf to exercise discretion.

I'm from the states and i remember a when a friend of mine got a warning through a letter because he downloaded a movie. it was a long time ago and i think the movie was ice age.
at any rate, if i were your gf, than i would immediately stop downloading movies. better safe than sorry

When your using torrents, you're both downloading and uploading at the same time since once you've downloaded parts of the file, you're also starting to seed.

Dunno in the states, pero even here, naa may minor "policing" done. ISP's sometimes get warned when some of their clients are caught downloading copyrighted material. They get warnings from Film Studios (in my experience NBC ang pinaka strikto) and other institutions. I've blocked a few IP's na from clients caught downloading such files.. of course, mo block ra ko once naa na ang warning from the owners mismo of the copyrighted materials
