JUMALON'S BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY
Macopa St., Cebu City
(Likod sa Basak Elementary School)
If you will be going there in big groups please arrange for an appointment.
FIRST, adto mo dad-on sa ilang butterfly garden where you can see the different stages of butterfly's life from egg, caterpillar, pupa (chrysalis) and the adult flying around. You will be introduced to the different food plants that butterfly are attracted to. Butterflies are attracted to the food plants rather than the flowers as they want to be sure that the egg that they are laying will hatch on a leaf that is edible for their caterpillar to eat.
SECOND, they will accompany you to the gallery of Prof. Julian Jumalon's painting. His painting is unique as he is not using watercolor, pastel, oil or crayon in coloring but the wings of the butterfly. This is a lepido-mosaic painting he introduced to the painting world. A lot of this painting was sold and was even brought outside of the Philippines. A Filipino priest even told him that his painting of Pope John Paul II could be seen inside the private room of the Pope. He has a butterfly painting of Abraham Lincoln which was bought by a Filipino and brought that in US. During a centennial celebration in the US, it was really appreciated and was even published in some newspapers but sad to note that the person who bought it claimed that it was his painting. The Jumalons have a copy of this newspaper item. After visiting the gallery by the way please be kind enough to shell an amount for donation in maintaining this facility. By the way, they do not ask for any entrance fee.
After the gallery you will be brought to the butterfly collection of Prof. Jumalon. You can see here his butterfly collection all over the Philippines and outside the Philippines. Aside from butterfly collections he have also bugs and other insect collections and other items he collected like miniature houses to spoon and forks and native implements.
Rene and Usman are two of Jumalon's sons whose going to entertain you but at most Usman will entertain you at the garden and at gallery because Rene is paraplegic (polio victim). By the way Prof. Julian Jumalon died I think 5 years ago at the age of 92 and had been a recipient of different awards but sad to say he was not able to get the Filipino Artist Award which is being awarded to Manila people only and some are even Prof. Jumalon's student. Ben Abellana of Cebu is the only non-Luzon based National Artist. Julian Jumalon is a painter who graduated his fine Arts at UP
