Speak out: Rachelle’s ideals

RACHELLE Mae Palang. An activist, a friend and a nurse.

She was an activist because she believed that Philippine society won’t progress if we are being choked by foreign masters.

"choked by foreign masters" hmmm that's quite a hasty generalization. in fact, this is discriminatory and tends to demonize the other parties.

She also believed there should be land for the tillers, and employment and education for all.

"land for the tillers", what is CARP there for then? "employment for all", hmmm murag lisod na dah. di man ang gobyerno maoy mohatag ug trabaho nimo. maybe he meant more opportunities lang. "education for all", di ba mao ni concept sa public schools nato?

DANGEROUS IDEALISM as we speak...

This was her belief and the reason we became friends.

Months ago, she passed the nursing board exam and was happy to achieve one of her dreams.

But I knew that was not the hardest exam of her life, that there is the difficult question: "Alang kang kinsa ko?"

Her answer to that question could be gleaned from her actions. She poured her energy, skill and intellect not for herself or the few but for the oppressed.

Oppressed? now that's adding political color. How about poor lang? medical mission man kha toh iya gi ad2, not political mission?

On Sept. 22, 2008, reports identified her as one of those killed in an encounter between the NPA and military. The latter tagged her as a rebel. I don't care.

U don't care, but some of us do. if im not mistaken, she is not only "tagged" as a rebel but "confirmed" as a rebel. Quite alarming for a parent like Mae's who doesn't have a clue their daughter is already toting an armalite.

But there are paid-mercenaries of the Arroyo regime who use their guns to kill people. They abduct and torture, and have a long record of terrorist acts.

paid mercenaries? terrorist acts? di ba kha iya ni gibali ang istorya nuon?

They did it to Cris Hugo, Ambo Guran and hundreds of other victims of extra-judicial killings.

and he don't even want to mention ex-NPA Romulo Kintanar who was killed by his former kind. He didn't even mention the mass grave found weeks ago in Balamban. He thinks those did not fall under extra-judicial killings. They want to call it collateral damage...

if im not mistaken, even criminals with no links to the gov't or NPA has the capability to do extra-judicial killings also. And maybe he didn't know most extra-judicial killings pertaining to journalists are not in any way work-related.

At the end of the day, however, there is the reality that Rachelle is gone. I have to pursue her ideals. I have to raise my fist.

To stop is to betray Rachelle.

Sorry but some of us would prefer not to follow her ideals and raise our fists for her...we just want to pity her and pray for her soul. And give more attention to our kids so that someday they'll become positive leaders, better and law-abiding citizens of our country, ma naay high IQ or not.

Gumanoy sisters vs. exploiters of youthful idealism

21-year-old Rachelle Mae Palang died on a cloudy September afternoon in a remote barangay in Dauin, Negros Oriental. She was killed in an encounter between elements of the Philippine Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion and the New People’s Army. The Cebuana was a member of the NPA....

...Rachelle had recently graduated as a nurse from Velez College, one of Cebu ’s best medical schools. She was the editor of the student publication in the college and an active member of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines, an organization belonging to the same network as Bayan Muna, Karapatan, Anakpawis and company. Rachelle’s father is a former municipal councilor. Her uncle is a bishop...

...Rachelle and Rose Ann generously shed their blood but the movement for which they did it, doesn’t deserve it. How can an organization that specializes in assassination of barangay officials and civilian informers, in extortion, destruction of property and recruitment of minors be worth the blood of the Filipino youth? How can civilian organizations, whose existence and success are built on deception and lies, be worth dying for?

Recruitment to both legal front organizations and the NPA itself are done by exploiting young people’s idealism, their loneliness and yearning for belonging and purpose and also through intimidation and deception by professors and peers, even in the fortress of youthful revolutionary idealism—the University of the Philippines.

Rachelle was officially in Negros Oriental to conduct a medical mission. The movement is in fact increasingly using medical missions and healthcare programs to gain access to communities and recruit new members, including participants in anti-government rallies. However, no medical missions were conducted in Dauin and the nearby town of Zamboangita during the several months that Rachelle and her friends stayed in the area.
