umm.... actually kang alohababy na description is more consistent with our folklore. kai hadlok lagi ang unsa ang compliment ang opposite mahitabo. like mo ingon ka "kaputi nimo oi" mangitom daw nuon.
You're supposed to say it for someone else's protection, specifically someone fragile like babies (this is the explanation I got from our neighbors sa bukid). Kay kung naa daw makadungog nga dili ingon nato, masuya and they will harm the baby instead.
I don't know if you can say "puryabuyag" for your own protection but yeah it seems there are people who use this word to be rude while others just don't know how to say thank you.

for me i default to understanding it as rude because mag insister gyud na mo ingon pud ko ug "puryabuyag" with them. murag ambot lang nilaaaaaaaa......
for me, naay idea si Tokidoki nga kanang puerabuyag buyag, dili palabian.
akong pasabot is, if mag sige nalang ta ug ka conscious ana, sigurado nga naay gyud mahitabo. Our mind conceives what it thinks.
pero for a precaution lang, pwede. Naa raman sad sa tao kung mu tuo ba sila ana.
Some people especially traditional Pinoys cant take compliment that well hence the word "buyag" in response. I think a simple Thank You will do![]()
i don't mind if i get a buyag response ... it just means they agree with me
Supposedly, it's a precaution against evil spirits who can overhear the compliments and, out of envy, wish to do harm towards the person receiving the compliments. "Buyag" is immediately said after the compliment, and it's usually used for cute children, because of the risk of being cursed, or even kidnapped by evil spirits.
Ambot, mao man daw na ang tinuohan, hehe.
