Well, it's a cliché to bring this topic up again but a discovery on Atlantis still awaits mankind even after passing through the year 2000 almost uneventfully. We have yet to land again on the moon as well as successfully terraform a part of Mars.

Atlantis is still in this planet. But I don't imagine a race of Atlanteans who have gills and might even look like mermen - I've never put stock on that kind of thinking about that place's inhabitants. We'd best still explore every nook and cranny on this planet first before venturing into space even further.
