The Batang Global clinched the best-of-five semifinal series, 3-1, winning the last two games on the road.
But they have little time to savor the victory as the team now travels down South to take the top seeded M.L Kuwarta Padala-Cebu Ninos in the maiden best-of-five title series.
Game 1 of the Finals will be played Monday at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Batang Global vs Niņos in Liga Finals -
    manila bulletin
CAGAYAN DE ORO — Harbour Centre-Taguig bucked the hometown crowd and produced a fiery shooting from beyond the arc to nip Hapee-Misamis Oriental, 77-73, and clinch the second finals seat in the 2008 Smart-Liga Pilipinas last Thursday.

Big man Marvin Ortiguerra making up for his so-so performance last time, starred in the Taguig’s assault by chalking up 23 points, which he highlighted with an amazing 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range (71 percent).

The 6-foot-5 former University of Santo Tomas standout also went 3-of-5 from the two-point zone and a perfect 2-of-2 from the foul line.

He also underscored his stellar showing by grabbing 11 rebounds in an MVP-like performance that helped the Batang Global advance to the finals by closing out the best-of-five semifinal series, leading 3-1.

But they have little time to savor the victory as the team now travels down South to take the top seeded M.L Kuwarta Padala-Cebu Niņos in the maiden best-of-five title series of the tournament sponsored by Rexona, Accel, Burlington, Molten, Metathione, Nature Spring, Pagcor Sports and Laptop Phoneshop.

Game 1 of the Finals will be played Monday at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Ex-pro Niņo Marquez added 17 points and six assists for the Batang Global, including a 3-of-5 stint from downtown, while MVP candidate Ronnie Matias added 11.

In all, Harbour Centre-Taguig made 52 percent of their shots from three-point land by going 11-of-21.

In contrast, Hapee-Misamis Oriental hit just 3-of-19 (16 percent).

The Meteors, though, kept the game close throughout, getting 18 markers from Patrick Cabahug, 11 from Egay Echavez and 10 each from Frank Nailon and Jerome Paterno.

The tightly-fought game had seven deadlocks and 11 lead changes, with the Meteors gaining advantage off the boards, 39-35, but had less assists, 14-17.

The home team shot just 40 percent from the floor (25-of-62), compared to the 47 percent clip (28-of-60) of the Batang Global, who also scored more points off turnovers, 16-11.

    TAGUIG 77 — Ortiguerra 23, Marquez 17, Matias 11, Aldave 6, Bautista 5, Latoreno 5, Gatumbato 4, Bombeo 2, Reguerra 2, Rodriguez 2, Vejandre 0.

    MISAMIS ORIENTAL 73 — Cabahug 18, Echavez 11, Nailon 10, Paterno 10, Concha 6, Franco 5, Moreno 4, Caputolan 3, Grijaldo 2, Tagupa 2, Pupos 2, Hugnatan 0.

    Quarters: 22-24; 36-33; 60-58; 77-73.

Cebu, Taguig start title series -
    manila bulletin
CEBU — M.L. Kwarta Padala-Cebu and Harbour Centre-Taguig have taken different routes to get here. But now their paths converge when they clash Monday in Game One of the Smart-Liga-Pilipinas Finals at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Game Two will be on Tuesday, also at the Cebu Coliseum before the best-of-five championship series, backed by Rexona, Accel, Burlington, Molten, Metathione, Nature Spring, Pagcor Sports and Laptop Phoneshop, shifts to the C.P. Tinga gym in Taguig for Game Three and, if necessary, Game Four.

Holding the homecourt advantage after emerging with the best win-loss record, the Niņos will host the Batang Global to a fifth and deciding Game Five, if one is needed.

"The Liga finals is a culmination of the dreams of communities turned into reality," said Liga chief executive Noli Eala.

"Quite significantly, the finalists – Cebu Niņos and Taguig Batang Global – represent what Liga dreamt of achieving: a merger of the best basketball traditions of the regions. We celebrate the Liga finals as a triumph of the true Filipino pride and Filipino spirit."

The two teams have met once before in the elimination, on June 18 in Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur, with Cebu hammering out at 98-93 overtime victory.

Taguig had come back from a 47-31 halftime deficit to pull even 82-all at the end of regulation before losing steam in the extra period.

Mark Ababon led the Niņos with 23 points that day, hitting 10 of 10 free throws, while teammates Bruce Dacia added 22 with eight rebounds and Stephen Padilla 20 points.

"We will surely have our hands full against the best team in the league, especially now that we lost our top scorer (Noy Javier) to a shoulder injury and also center-forward Anthony Cuevas to the pros," said Taguig coach Jude Roque.

"Some key players are also playing hurt. But we have survived tough situations before. If we play together and give our best, we have a chance. We especially need to improve our defense."

The three are expected to again figure prominently for Cebu coach Yayoy Alcoseba, with support coming from Jayford Rodriguez, Marlon Basco, Danilo Aying, Ron Capati and Ian Saladaga.

The intensely-partial Cebu crowd will make life hellish for the visiting Batang Global and coach Jude Roque will have to pry the best from Noy Javier, Lou Gatumbato, Marvin Ortiguerra, Paul Reguerra, Ronnie Matias, Niņo Marquez, and Boyet Bautista.
