Cebu mayor may scrap Sinulog festival

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, meanwhile, talked about scrapping next year's activities altogether.

"It looks like we're going to cancel the Sinulog if COA will not allow it (exemption). The Sinulog cannot proceed with the assistance from the city," he told a press conference Monday.

let's be objective, sinulog is NOT synonymous to cebu city government.

the Cebu City LGU is not Sinulog and did not start Sinulog thereby cannot cancel Sinulog.

let's keep that straight.

if because of this thing with COA will deter the cebu city government from releasing funds for next year's Sinulog, then let the Sinulog Foundation source it from the private sectors while securing the necessary permits from city hall. it may be more difficult but it is possible.

if we come to think of it, COA is right. the LGU should not be spending for religious activities but, the BIG BUT is Sinulog has become so big, thereby making it a tourist attraction at the same time. then this is where the justification for releasing of funds come in.

tomas is not crazy to categorically cancel the sinulog, he is just merely passing the heat to COA.

let's not over react, the issue is still premature.
