i agree with stork320, try scuba world, they have a nice facility just beside the hilton hotel and condominium, there are instructors there that could give you a little bit of discount if you are a filipino, range between 10K to 15K. i think thats the standard rate nowadays for most shops, you can dive a lot cheaper if you are already certified and more so if you dive in a group, usually its the boats that are expensive especially when you want to dive in the islands adjacent to cebu that's why i suggest you dive in a group to minimize your expenses.

but since your gf is just new to diving then you can always opt for beach entry, there are places in mactan where you can do this without extra payment as long that you have your gears, you can also rent gears if you knew someone in the shop and just bring it to where you want to dive.

i suggest you try the marigondon cave just in front of plantation bay mactan, its a very good spot especially if our into cave and cavern diving, but then its not for the beginners. but hey, just tell me what's your preferrable price range for your diving, maybe i can inquire with my friends in here.

We managed to find an instructor on Dumaguete who will be giving her lessons. She is studying the PADI "Open water crew pak" so this will hopefully cut down the instruction time to about 2 or 3 days instead of the normal 4 to 5 days. This will give us more time to dive together at the end of the vacation on Apo Island. She also joined a gym for their swimming pool to make sure she is a strong enough swimmer for the test where she has to swim 200m and tread water for 10mins

I don't have a problem with paying for the instruction, just with the total price. I feel it's very unfair for the locals who would like to try the sport. Why it should be cheaper in California than Cebu is beyond me unless it is just to cater for the tourists.

Thank you for all the info

yeah! i feel the same way too, i always wanted to see more locals to engage in this sport or hobby but for now its still too expensive, i mean about getting the certificates to dive. mostly the tourists are the one who are benifitting the underwater view in our country. you can't really blame the instructors here also, they have to invest a lot with their studies and equipments just to reach there present level.

anyhow, maybe one of this days i can make some changes on this trend, hopefully...

I think the reason for the higher cost here, well at least in the case of PADI, is coz i think PADI headquarters is in california. So after taking your diving course and taking the written test, these have to be submitted by the instructor to california, and it is the hq which then approves your certification license. And maybe also to cover for the cost of having to be a PADI certified dive center or instructor. So obviously its cheaper in california coz PADI lives just next door, not half a world away.

Just my 2c. This is information is not verified.

well sad to say scubadiving is a expensive sport/hobby.. why scubadiving lesson here in the phils are expensive? first if you are enrolled in PADI its a little bit higher than other organization. u cant take the course if u dont have a book of ur own which is good u have ur own reference. the materials now is 3,300.00 openwater, other organizations the book is not mandatory thats why thier price is lower bec. no materials. OR no complete facilities like ex. swimmingpool / classsroom etc..

if u want a lower price theres a lot in mactan, but there a saying and i always believe on this one. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR!!! why you risk your life for 2,000 max difference.. your life is not a 2,000 worth is priceless...

    HEHEHE

    Yours in diving
