Im not an expert ok. Just my experience

1. unit maintenance - Palit blower ug keep it dry kanunay. I would suggest putting it in a dry box after use. Kay taas humidity sa pinas high tendency for molds
2. good lenses to buy and other accessories - 18-200mm VR is good, sigma 30mm 1.4 prime good for portraits and an Sb800. But if you can afford a SB900 pwerting ok kaayo.
3. Photography camera settings
a) Portrait - widest aperture as possible for outdoors.
b) landscape - My settings would AP mode @ f10
c) blur - it depends on you lens.
d) night photos (bulb) - advance na ni para sa akong powers. (Anyone has to say for this topic )
e) others - "Its not a matter of the pana but its a matter of the indian" Keep on shooting

never underestimate the power of kit lens(18-55mm)
instead of buying zoom lens try composing on kit lens first.
then evaluate what kind of photography that u wud really like.
thats when u decide if u really gonna upgrade or not.
rather than ending up collecting lenses.

from my experience with my d40 before..

maintainance..
clean only when you have to! <-- very important
avoid changing lens in dusty area
if mo ad2 mo sa dagat if dili gamiton iwrap ug shirt (the salty air is very bad for the cam)

lens and accessories
18-55 is a very good kit lens...probably the best in the kit lens ever..
best lens would be 18-200 VR
cheaper alternative would be a 55-200 VR
flash get at least a sb600, better if sb800
tripod get a sturdy one like the sherpa 600R

i'd suggest you get the flash first then tripod then lens

more accessories check prg photo shop did2 sa baseline.. they are more or less "complete" and cheap

settings
portrait - use tripod.. use A mode; experament between f8 and f11; iso lowest; best focal 80mm-105mm
landscape - use tripod again.. A mode gahapon; use high aperture like 16 up; focal range 35mm-down
blur- use S mode; the higher the number the number or faster the shutter the more ma freeze the oppostie applies too.. daghan effects depende unsa imo gusto ma happend
bulb - use tripod, IR remote or timmer with mirror lock up; settings... i say depende unsa imo ishoot..
others - like what?
