Team USA earned gold with commitment, respect

• Making commitment fashionable again: Team USA won the gold medal in Beijing on Sunday, but the seeds for victory were sown well before that. Success was achieved when Jerry Colangelo put together a demanding program of commitment and togetherness, and made competing in the Olympics cool again.
Team USA won the gold medal not because of talent. Every team that the United States has fielded over the past eight years has been talented enough to win gold. This team had something different: commitment. Earlier versions of Team USA lacked the collective vision and single-minded purpose of this team. Earlier versions of Team USA were collections of super talented individuals that were chosen by committee and had little accountability to each other. This team was a true team, and had one leader: Colangelo. He was given full authority to get the job done, and that authority was put in the right hands.
