Try to have some circulation at the water's surface to gas out the excess dissolved CO2. Or make the reactor/diffuser less efficient i.e., place the diffuser closer or midway to the water surface or away from the filter intake.
OR disconnect the co2 at night when the fish are only gasping early morning.
Even if your plants are pearling like mad, high levels of dissolved co2 can still cause suffocation.
Which leads me to another trivia!
Water can be saturated with co2 and o2 at the same time. true, false or tralse.
