AFTER their disappointment with the International Boxing Federaton, ALA Promotions will focus on the World Boxing Organization title fight of their prized super flyweight pugilist Z “The Dream” Gorres.
Last Feb. 2 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City, Gorres and Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan, battled to a controversial draw in an IBF title eliminator for the no. 1 contender spot.
With no clear winner, IBF ruled that Darchinyan will be the challenger of Dimitri Kirilov, the super flyweight champion at that time, because the Armenian was ranked higher than the Cebuano.
Gorres was also promised by the organization that he will be the next challenger of the winner of the Kirilov vs. Darchinyan battle.
But after Darchinyan defeated Kirilov by a fifth-round KO, IBF informed ALA Promotions that they will be giving Gorres another eliminator for the no.1 spot, a move that irked ALA Promotions.
Disappointed, ALA Promotions has focused their attention on getting a rematch with WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel.
“It is not yet formal but the tentative date will be on Dec. 13 in Macau,” Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
According to ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer, Montiel, who defeated Gorres last year via a split decision, still showed interest to fight Gorres in a rematch even if Top Rank’s blockbuster card in Macau on October, which featured bouts of IBF and International Boxing Organization flyweight king Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Brian Viloria and Bernabe Concepcion, was postponed.
Even if the Montiel camp hasn’t called them yet, Aldeguer is optimistic that the fight will happen.
However, there will be another scenario for Gorres.
Aldeguer has heard a lot of talk that Montiel is having a hard time making the super flyweight limit and as a result, there will be a possibility that Montiel will be leaving the division and vacate his belt.
“There will be a chance that Montiel will be vacating his belt because I’ve heard that he has a hard time making the 115 pound limit,” said Aldeguer.
Aldeguer said that with a vacant title, Gorres could fight the no. 1 contender Pramansak Phosawan of Thailand for the championship.
“Either way, the future will be bright for Z.” said Aldeguer. (EKA)
