excuse me, but ROCK is never mediocre. nu-uh.. i don't think so.
you know what richard79, you need to grow-up and get out of your momma's under pants bro... i consider myself a punk rocker but i can freakin play jazz licks on my bass guitar until your head spins off! it doesn't mean that there is something wrong with me if i dig angsty music. i dig punk rock because my principles and lifestyle is reflected on the said genre. you should try to listen to what alot of us "mediocre" people are listening into and then call us mediocre straight in our faces.
i'm not impressed that you listen to jazz because i don't think you know what your'e talking about. your'e too close minded to claim to be a music lover. ur a poser. music is art and art has no boundaries. you can't put art in a box and claim that this is the perfect form and all else is mediocre.
and FYI, picasso's art was considered mediocre as well as elvis songs when he first came out.
dang! why don't you get a life richard79I mean grow up man! or might as well go educate yourself and go back to skul? this is such nonsense! blah!
he's just trying to stir up a comotion here...in which we should frown-upon instead of delving with his pseudo-intellectual know-it-all mongering.
First Off: clearly this guys has just discovered contemporary drumming...
He mentions Buddy Rich (arguably the best drummer ever) pero Rich's music has no lyrics. He plays Swing-Jazz mostly.... one thing you failed to realize, Richard79, is that Buddy Rich is an "ARSEHOLE" (forgive my french). Buddy Rich tends to chew out his bandmates just because he had a bad day..... such talent yet such an attitude as well.
Steve Gadd is pure genius, revolutionized studio drumming.. but he hardly writes his own stuff...he's a session player.. plays other people's works... and as far as writing lyrics, I wonder what would it be if he started writing.. what would it be about... weed??
Vinnie Colaiuta is another session drummer .. very diverse.. eve did the drum tracks for Megadeth's last album.... pero same as Gadd, Rich, and Weckl.. Colaiuta doesn't write lyrics.
Weckl ... technical genius..amazing drummer.. yet like the rest, he doesn't write lyrics. I have 3 of his albums.. amazing works, great talent... yet, no lyrics.
- Now... you mentioned about more meaningful lyrics yet the people you also mentioned are drummers who plays instrumentals.. mostly jazz, swing, fusion, etc... are you just trying to show off?? Show people that you know these types of music? Does that give you the right to bash other music genre??
If you're sick of all the mainstream rock out there, you can always dig deeper and not complain about it. Music is subjective, if you don't like what you hear on the radio, turn it off... pull out your CD collection and listen to the stuff that you like.. that's what I do.
Why pamper life's complexities when the leather runs smooth on the passenger seat?
nice one ezra!

richard79, u need to dig more about music. i respect ur opinion. dont judge other music or genre if dont like them. though i hate those "hale" or "cueshe" songs, but everybody has its own favorite. if u like jazz, so be it.
i am a country fan, and basically rock n' roll is d roots of all rock music and it is never mediocre.
d 3 chords of elvis presley's songs started the rock out from bill haley's 'rock around the clock' in 1955. punk musicians derived their 3-chord style from it, re-generating it to sound different.
well, i respect all genres of music. i even listen from mozart to marilyn manson, from the platters to garth brooks, from max surban to smooth friction, all that makes me enjoy. we hate some songs. but respect the writers. bahala na sila kung mao na ila ganahan.
peace...
