Default Windows 98 + USB HDD

    Scenario is like this:
My friend has a laptop, no floppy drive, no cd-rom. the OS has been busted. OS was Windows XP
How can i install the OS back into the laptop?

the solution i was thinking of was:
attached the HDD to a USB enclosure.
    partitioned it into 2
copied the installation files into the 2 partition.
    format 1st partition with windows 98 format/s
install it back into the laptop to boot from DOS

problem is? can DOS see my USB HDD in DOS mode?

i can boot from any USB device since my BIOS supports it.

then you're goot to go, if can be able to 'burn' an installer image on the usb hdd, it will run just like you have cd-drive.

    sakto..
    put in a usb enclosure..

but attached to ur pc..( hopefully ur pc support external booting )..

remove power / ide form ur internal hdd

have a bootable cd win 98 / xp / vista etc...

boot from cd....and install it to ur external hdd..

kinda lengthy installation but works just fine.

when done.. DO NOT INSTALL THE DRIVERS>>>>

    restart.

connect again ur hdd power and cables..

    bios settings..advance..boot selection..primary hdd : ur drive c: hdd ( of course! )

then copy all the needed files to the lappy.. >>>>>> be sure to copy windows installation files in a folder..

re install the mobile hdd to the lappy...

    run the lappy..

basically its kinda lengthy first start as it will install necessary driver to run it on the lappy. ( not the legacy drivers thats needs cd )

    done..

    enjoy!

**** i've done it twice on different occasion and client... its like trying a way around a hurdle other than jumping over it....
