The word SPIRIT refers only to the immaterial facet of man. Mankind has a spirit, but we are not a spirit.

those who are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, are said to be "spiritually alive" (1 Corinthians 2:11; Hebrews 4:12; James 2:26). Unbelievers are "spiritually dead" (Ephesians 2:1-5; Colossians 2:13).

The spirit is the element in man which gives him the ability to have an intimate relationship with God. Whenever the word spirit is used, it refers to the immaterial part of man including his soul. (The "spirit" is man's vertical view with God.)

SOUL refers not only to the immaterial part of man but the also material part. Unlike man having a "spirit," man is a living soul. (The "soul" is man's horizontal view with the world.)

    and you are correct bro.

the soul is the combination of these two factors:
Body (dust) + Spirit (breath) = A Living Soul

-is the only correct idea you have... I disagree with the others...

    @Hellblazer 2.1

He said it second. Newtonscousin said it first in his last paragraph.

since this thread is all about soul and spirit of man, we have to base everything from the Bible.

you know why? naa dha ang atong first history about soul and spirit.
God made everything during the first week of creation.
Adam and Eve ang pinaka una sa tanang tao. then dha nato e base kong gi unsa pag buhat sa Ginoo ang tao.

Genesis 2:7 - And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 - Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

what is the spirit, mentioned in these text?
Job 27:3 - All the while my breath [is] in me, and the spirit of God [is] in my nostrils.

the soul is the combination of these two factors:
Body (dust) + Spirit (breath) = A Living Soul

It may be wrong. It may be right. However, this is not an issue of perfections. Mere opinions shared on the matter. Opinions have no bases, and therefore are not accurate and perfect. There is NO perfect opinion. It is up to us to disagree or agree. It is our option to say whether your opinion is agreeable or disagreeable.

I searched the Bible (New International Version) using BibleGateway.com: A searchable online Bible in over 50 versions and 35 languages. for the words 'soul' and 'spirit'.

It came up with 136 instances for the word 'soul' and 569 instances for the word 'spirit'.
    ---

In general, it appears, at least in the New International Version, that the idea of 'soul' sometimes refer to the inner self of a person while physically living and the idea of 'spirit' sometimes refer to a disembodied person (physically dead).

This does not always hold true for the idea of 'soul' seems to be sometimes used synonymously with 'person' (whether physically living or not).

And the word 'spirit' also seems sometimes used in the other senses that we do in language, like "he has a different spirit", "in high spirits", "in him is the spirit", and so on.

To further complicate matters, both 'soul' and 'spirit' seems to sometimes even be used interchangeably.
    ---

At least two verses looks suggestive of soul being not the same as the body:

Psalm 42:11 Why are you downcast, O my soul?
    Why so disturbed within me?
    Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

Matthew 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
    ---

This verse looks suggestive of spirit and soul being different.

    Hebrews 4:12-13

12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
    ---

And this verse looks suggestive of spirit, soul, body as being different from each other.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
