Linux Deployment

We have successfully deployed 80 workstations with CentOS 5 installed to all our branches in VisMin and our target is around 200. Our deployment started last Dec. and since then we only have about 8 workstations returned due to hardware failure and 1 OS related problem ... What a relief!!!

can you indicate the type of deployment? database system involved? are these stations only stand-alone? what's your central server, open source also? what about your primary database system?

We have about 30 workstations here in our office (near Norkis in Mandaue) that's running Ubuntu 6.06.1 for over a year now.

So far we've only had 2 workstations returned due to hardware failure (busted IDE & PSU).

We are a publishing company, BTW. So the only things our workstations get used for are surfing the net, word processing (via Open Office), and e-mail (via Evolution).

It's good to know that some offices here in the Vis-Min Area are converting to Linux.

BTW, here are some specs in anyone if interested:

Intel Celeron D 3.06Ghz (533 FSB) or Intel Celeron 420 (1.6 Ghz & 800FSB)
1GB Hynix DDR400 (1x1GB)
64MB ASUS Geforce MX-4000 or 64MB Inno3D Geforce MX-440 or 64MB Inno3D GeForce MX-400 or 256MB Geforce FX-5500 (ALL AGP)

NOTES:

* Only one system was installed with Ubuntu. After that one system had Ubuntu installed on it the rest of the units were cloned using the dd rescue option in Ghost 4 Linux. No problems were encountered in the cloning process.

* Installed Nvidia Drivers through Automatix2.

* Users use Skype, and on these workstation I'm happy to report that the built-in sound card (input & output) works.

Special Note:

There are plans to upgrade to 8.04, but the technical people are a bit hesitant, especially after problems were encountered when a test system similar to the one mentioned above and sporting a Geforce MX-4000 ran into trouble installing Nvidia Video Drivers through either Envy or Synaptic.

its just a plain workstation with a proprietary apps and a collaborative suite installed on it and direct online connection thru vpn ... nothin much!

Hahahahaha sa tinuod lang I never had the time to use these tools ... this could help us a lot if we did some diggings about it ... we do it the old traditional ways ( me embarrassed ) setup each workstation hahahahaha

Happy to be of help. Hope that would make it easier for you to deploy another group of systems next time.

We actually tried using Norton Ghost for cloning, pero it did'nt work. So our tech people (2 people actually) decided to recruit some of the employees (including me, I'm a copy editor BTW) to help them install Ubuntu the old-fashioned way (e.g. each volunteer was issued 5 copies of Linux and 5 workstation to install them on).

Pero salamat na lang na-discover mi sa Ghost 4 Linux when we did some research on a linux alternative to Norton Ghost on the internetz before the 30+ workstations arrived.

Just like BadDudes, amoa are plain workstations with the default apps of Ubuntu 6.06.1 installed. We also had to install Nvidia Drivers for the video cards. As well as Flash & Java. PLUS also installed Opera & Dillo Web Browsers as backup to Firefox.

As for servers, the only servers we have here in the office are of the BSD variety. No Linux servers.
