In New Testament times, Sunday replaced the Jewish Sabbath. St. Paul and the Christians of Troas assembled on the first day of the week "to break bread" (Ac. 20:7), and the apostle bade his converts put by their alms on this day (1 Co. 16:2). St. John called it "the Lord's Day," which the Western Church later translated Dominica, the title still used for Sunday in official ecclesiastical Latin.
