Best thing to do is remove ALL your video players ( aside from windows media player ) and install Klite MEGApack, it uses the old mplayer to to play EVERY videofile from AVI to mkv

I don't have any codec pack installed (Vista), and the files play just fine with PowerDVD

bro, uninstall all your codecs and filters. Mostly likely you have filters and codecs overlapping one another and causing slowdown.

Install CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) at Combined Community Codec Pack. It contains ffdshow, haali, vsfilter and media player classic. I download fansub anime and movies. Trust me, this is all you need.

I'm running on Athlon 64 3000+, 1GB DDR and WinFAST 6600. I can play MKV files at 1280x720 with no slow down.

MKV is the new container, better than AVI because MKV can do mpeg4, multiple subtitles and audio. ^_^
