Didn't Paul meant work as "work of the law" which won't merit anything.

...if someone sees his works/works of the law that merits/earns him of God's favor then I agree with you that it won't merit anything. It might also help if you read Isaiah 64:6

You opened up the topic of "work of the law" as far as I know. To recap, I think this is what I posted before.
1. A pastor or priest denying a dying man help on the side of the road to prioritize sunday/saturday church. <---work of the law. This is Paul refers to as the work that is useless, agree?

However, I feel sorry for that pastor or priest who prioritized sunday/saturday church instead of helping a dying man. He will be held accountable to God for what he has done. On the contrary, I don't think a person who is fully aware (and is grateful to the Lord) of owing his very life to God's mercy will neglect the practical application of what he has learned from his faith. Otherwise he will be like the Pharisees who are keen in observing the letters of the Law but not actually upholding the Spirit of the Law (Matthew 23). I take this as an isolated case.

2. An athiest helping a dying man on the side of the road even if it is very inconvenient for him. <---good work.

...it does not change the fact that he is an atheist. My question for you is: Does the atheist think what he has done as a good work that God may even notice? In the first place calling him an atheist already suggests he does not believe in God . What's your point, bro?
