CEBU CITY – Blowouts marked the opening salvo of the 2008 Liga Pilipinas ML Kwarta Padala Preseason Tournament Saturday evening (May 24) at the New Cebu Coliseum. The Misamis Oriental Meteors made short work of the Pagadian Explorers, 103-84. In the main game, host Cebu Ninos crushed the Iloilo Warriors, 128-94.

The M. Lhuillier-sponsored Ninos allowed the Warriors to score the first basket of the game, then answered with 11 straight points and the Warriors never recovered from there. The lead ballooned to as much as 49 markers early in the final period, 113-64. The Warriors of Coach Jerry Jaranilla then managed to bomb away from the three-point line to pare down the final deficit.

Ronald Capati led the Ninos with 19 points followed by Stephen Padilla with 17 and new recruit Richard Ian Saladaga with 16. Five other Ninos submitted double-digits to underscore the balanced attack of Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba. Tex Pelopero buried six triples to pace the Warriors with 20 points while Joseph Guanco added 17. Ruel Balgos had a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

In the first game, the Meteors of Gov. Oscar Moreno rewarded new coach Jun Noel with the rousing victory. The Explorers of Mayor Sammy Co and Coach Eric Samson hung tough in the first period, controlling the contest until Ronnie Zagala scored a late basket to lift the Meteors on top, 21-20.

It was an all-Meteors show from there as they methodically mowed downed every Explorer attempt to come back. The win came at a cost as Meteor guard Ramil Tagupa was carried out of the court with a sprained ankle midway in the final canto. Tagupa had an excellent showing with 13 points and nine assists.

Donald Tadena topped the Meteors with 20 points and nine rebounds followed by Zagala with 17. Centers Jojo Omandam and Arian Daja led the Explorers with 22 and 15 points respectively.

Selected games from the tournament will be televised over the National Broadcasting Network (NBN-4) and local channel Cebu Catholic Television Network (CCTN-47).

CEBU CITY – The Misamis Oriental Meteors won their second straight game Sunday night (May 25) at the ML Kwarta Padala Liga Pilipinas Preseason Tournament at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The Meteors of Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Jun Noel survived the challenge of the debuting Zamboanga Amores, 79-77. In the first game, Pagadian Explorers of Mayor Sammy Co and Coach Eric Samson eliminated the Iloilo Warriors of Coach Jerry Jaranilla from contention, 91-88.

The Meteors were well in control for majority of the game until veteran Ronald Saracho single-handedly carried the Amores back into contention by unloading 12 markers in the fourth quarter. The Amores flubbed a chance to tie the game when Peter Naron split his free throws at the nine-second mark, 77-78. Naron then fouled Ronnie Zagala who made his first but missed his second free throw to pad the Meteors’ edge, 79-77. Edter Chua grabbed the defensive rebound and fired an outlet pass to a streaking Junnie Navarro, who was then stopped by a wall of Meteor defenders at the buzzer.

Donald Tadena and Jerome Paterno led the Meteors with 15 and 14 points respectively. Saracho, a one-time CAAA MVP with Southwestern University, finished with a game-best 24 followed by center Mark Kong with 10.

In the first game, the Explorers avoided a big endgame collapse with timely hits in the final minute of play. Eldrin Senierez fueled the Warriors’ fourth quarter rally with 10 points. The Explorers nursed a shaky three-point lead, 87-84, until a passing error sent the ball back to the Warriors with 28 seconds to play. Senierez launched an off-balanced triple that could have tied the game.

Jan Villaver then added a free throw to give the Explorers breathing room with 16 ticks on the clock, 88-84. Suddenly, Warrior John Guanco sank a triple to threaten, 87-88. Both teams then exchanged free throws. In the final five seconds, the Warriors quickly moved the ball down the court to an open Guanco who made a triple, only to be overruled as time had already expired when the shot was attempted.

Villaver atoned for his scoreless performance the day earlier with 28 points. Mark Yee added 17 and Arian Daja 14. Senierez paced the Warriors with 28 points followed by Elben Leonida with 15 and Tex Pelopero with 12.

CEBU CITY – The M. Lhuillier-sponsored Cebu Ninos and the Pagadian Explorers hacked out contrasting wins Monday night (May 26) to barge into the championship game of the ML Kwarta Padala Liga Pilipinas Preseason Tournament at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The Explorers of Mayor Sammy Co and Coach Eric Samson staged a big rally in the final canto then held their breath in the final seconds to boot out the Misamis Oriental Meteors of Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Jun Noel, 78-75. In the nightcap, the Ninos of Michel J. Lhuillier and Coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba toyed with the Zamboanga Amores of Coach Ronald Rico, 97-73.

Trailing by nine entering the fourth period, 49-58, the Explorers turned to Mark Yee and Arian Daja to power their comeback. Daja scored on an under-goal stab to give the Explorers the lead for good with 1:30 to go, 71-70. Yee and Roberts Labagala added four free throws to pad their lead, 77-72, and 25 ticks on the clock.

In the next play, Alano Caputolan buried a triple to threaten, 75-77. Bryan Faundo quickly fouled Yee, who could only make one free throw, 78-75, and a good 11 seconds remaining. The Explorers did not place any rebounders on the key so possession quickly went to Meteors but Ronnie Zagala mishandled the ball to seal their fate.

Daja led the Explorers with 19 points while Yee finished with 18. Ramil Tagupa had an excellent effort for the Meteors with 26 points, six assists and six steals. Faundo added 17 points.

The Ninos banked on a jackrabbit start and never looked back. Ronald Capati tallied 10 points in the opening period to lift the Ninos on top, 31-14. It was an all-Ninos show from thereon. The win came at a cost as the Ninos’ top point guard Woodrow Enriquez sustained a wrist injury midway in the second quarter and never returned. Enriquez will be evaluated before the championship game if he can play.

Starter Capati led all scorers with 21 markers while Jayford Rodriguez and Danny Aying chipped in 17 and 15 points coming off the bench. Mark Kong paced the Amores with 16 markers followed by Glen Caindoy with 14.

CEBU CITY – The M. Lhuillier-backed Cebu Ninos added another page to its long resume of championships by bagging the ML Kwarta Padala Liga Pilipinas Preseason Tournament Tuesday (May 2 at the New Cebu Coliseum over the gritty Pagadian Explorers, 88-74.

The Ninos of multi-titled coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba banked on a crippling 16-0 run to finish the first half, 51-36, starring Richard Ian Saladaga and Ronald Capati.

That was all the Ninos needed as the Explorers threatened briefly in the third quarter, 57-61. Veteran Danny Aying cooled the Explorers’ rally with a triple and Jayford Rodriguez added six points to push the Ninos comfortably ahead after three quarters, 72-61.

Saladaga then sank a triple followed by a Marlon Basco basket to deliver the knockout blow entering the final two minutes, 87-69, thus earning for the Ninos the very first championship trophy of the Philippines’ newest community-based league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP).

Without ace point guard Woodrow Enriquez, who fractured his wrist the day earlier, the Ninos struggled for form thus allowing the Explorers of Mayor Sammy Co and Coach Eric Samson to dictate the tempo. Coach Alcoseba was forced to use Jerry Cavan and Stephen Padilla to distribute the ball in lieu of Enriquez. The Explorers led by as much as seven markers, 21-14, but the Ninos still managed to salvage the opening canto on a buzzer-beating trey by Michael Luga, 24-23.

Rodriguez led the Ninos with 17 points followed by Saladaga with 16 and Basco with 15. Arian Daja was the high man for the Explorers with 19 markers. Mark Yee had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Earlier in the day, the Misamis Oriental Meteors of Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Jun Noel salvaged Third Place by routing the Zamboanga Amores of Coach Ronald Rico, 101-71. The Meteors raced to a 22-6 lead after the opening canto behind the 10 points of center Bryan Faundo and never looked back from there. The lead grew to as much as 44 markers late in the third period, 71-27.

Faundo topped the Meteors with 22 while Jerome Paterno and Ronnie Zagala added 16 each. Ramil Tagupa had a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. Joemie Alvarez paced the Amores, who are also supported by Rep. Erbie Fabian, with 20 points. Ronald Saracho and Mark Kong submitted 17 and 11 respectively.

Liga Pilipinas will be launched this coming Saturday (May 31) with formal rites at the Casino Espanol in Cebu City. BAP-SBP president Manuel V. Pangilinan has been invited as the guest of honor and speaker.
