    MrBiddle,

CCD chip is a thing of the past; I first encountered it in 1972 via the trendsetting Sony VCR 1610.

Now, the state-of-the-art system is called CMOS Technology for Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor. True to its leadership status, Sony developed this proprietary system and introduced it in its Sony DCR-PC1000, still on miniDV standard.

But if you really want to strut around, get the JVC's breakthrough HDV camcorder, the 6.9 pound and shoulder-sitting JVC GY-HD100U, at something like $6,295 MSRP.

    MrBiddle,

Oh, yes, the JVC Everio MC500 also functions as a phantom disk drive, if your bay can recognize it; if not, Matrox RT100 Extreme has a downloadable recognition tool, but then only if your capture board is that very Matrox RT100 Extreme.

My only problem with this JVC is very similar to my old problem with Sony DCR VX1000; that is --- its steady shot system kind of holds back a few frame when you start the pan, thinking perhaps that the pan movement is a shake. This problem does not look pretty in the shot.

Overall, JVC MC-500 Everio is effective, especially its near invisibility which the documentary filmmakers will love.

Ah yes, CMOS. The newer in image sensor technology, I also hear it consumes LESS power than a charge coupled device
