The Maltese has a longer snout and should only be in one solid color --- pure white (light ivory is acceptable). Shih Tzus have a short snout and can be found in different colors-- solids, tri-color or two colors.

this is my doggie Sophie. She's a mix between a shih tzu and a spitz. she gave birth to 2 adorable girl puppies named Peanut and Butter two months ago. Here they are...

To prevent the coat from matting, you have to brush it every day. If your shih tzu's coat is very matted, i suggest you go to your groomer and have it detangled/ de-matted. It's not the shampoo but the maintenance of the coat Also, before bathing, make sure he doesn't have any matted hair, otherwise it'll only make it worse and you might have to cut that portion out.
