i like shooting on a narrow DOF

Here's what I found out about the DOF using the 50mm f1.8:
if you are taking the shot at f1.8 the DOF is very shallow and if you are particulary close to the subject, only a small area of the subject will remain in focus. However during my test, when I move further away from the subject about 4 feet but still use f1.8, more of the subject becomes in focus and the rest of the background beautifully blurred.
