I hate the idea of ranking guitar players according to greatness or technical skill, speed, virtuosity, innovativeness, etc...but Eddie Van Halen on no. 70 spot is simply preposterous!

But this post really knocked me off... I thought I was the only Bossa Nova freak in this forum...

Yes, these two guys are the ones I would like to emulate aside from my futile attempts at Pat Metheny licks. I'm also dipping my fingers into the chord voicings of not so familiar Brazilian dudes Joao Bosco and Djavan! Cheers!

I do emulate these fellaz.....with my airguitar! hahahaha. sos kung kahibaw pa lang ko mogitara....kini ako tirada man jud bah. when I was a kid....naay motudlo unta nako ug gitara but....im left-handed...mismo ang nagtudlo nako naglisod pud hihihi.

Oh well....one thing that enjoys me most.....listening and hearing this type of genre.

It was only back in 2002 that I dusted it out of mothballs when I heard this neat voicing of No Such Thing by John Mayer... I knew right there and then that this guy must have been influenced either willfully or subconsciously by Brazilian guitarists... but that's purely speculation on my part because I haven't really delved into the musical background of John Mayer. His voicing on the intro of No Such Thing is typical of Jobim songs... he substitutes the EM7 chord with an EM9.
Try listening to his song '83 in the same album Room for Squares, the Bossa Nova influence is quite obvious in this song.

This is the wrong list for you. The list is about guitarists who caused change and contributed something to their artform.

Van Halen is a great guitarist. He influenced technique, tone, design, etc.

Jimi Hendrix influence music itself.

Can't you get that?

If you can't, then you never will and you are appreciating music for the wrong reasons.

Wow... I have to admit that I find some of the entries on that list cause me some mild stomach distress. BUT, I think I know why we guitarists are collectively having so much trouble with this list: The people who published the list are MAGAZINE people, not GUITARISTS. They are LISTENERS of music with a particular interest in American music culture, not PLAYERS. Their perspective of "influential value" of a particular player is based on an entirely different set of dynamics and criteria. They are able to assign importance to a player who only knows a handful of elementary chords if they feel that the those 3 or 4 chords (in a song) signified a change in a current trend of music. Jack White of the White Stripes?? Eeaghhh...

My advice? #1) ignore the list, or
#2) research all the names on the list (missing something good?)
#3) make your own list and only look at that

yeah imagine kim thayil at 100 I dont think joan jett is better than him, you're difinitely right, the ones who make the lists are mag people not guitarists. no steve vai, no satriani no petrilli, no mustaine, no eric johnson one of the most respected as a soloist and a session guitar player, a versatile one and where's ritchie sambora whom alice cooper once said that if he only has to pick one guitar player, it would be sambora.

did you know that people in the US are furious with this list? try surfing the lists and you'll know how mad they really are.

the list is an insult to those who study, didicate and play the guitar with passion.

britney spears can learn the basic chords and then try to look cool with it, then she'll be in the list. it can happen.

for me guys...
the only thing that makes guitarist play is when they play with their hearts...jimmy did that so did, stevie ray, satriani, eric clapton and b.b. king...i just got started on blues because the expression is so great that it doesn't matter if you play fast or slow (slow hand blues is just so good), good or bad as long as it comes from the heart, it sounds great...

you can use a thousand effects, an ultra fast finger lick or the greatest sound mix but if you don't play with your heart, it is just another lick on the fret board...
if you see jimi play (i know you guys already have)it is not really stage presence but a feel of what he is playing...body language, facial expressions really tell that he is feeling the time with his axe...

i think the list was just based on someone's opinion and reference to how he is plays or see someone play, the poll was just a bit part of it...in this case, i think the author likes those who knows how to make the crowd go berserk (with kurt on the top 20) or those with heavy and fast guitar leads (as to kirk hammet and Mark Tremonti-guy from creed) so basically guys its all good, everyone is entitled to his opinion even though it dissapoints a lot of us (like me - waaah!!) ...the only thing that i am disappointed is that there is a rise of different genre names of music that basically sound the same and labels to sound types that is not right....and the lack of identity to the music that we have in todays time...

most kids today just dont appreciate the old times when scales, licks, guitar solos were part of a song...usually today is now 2 finger chords and thats it...quite disappointing sometimes...
