Kidding aside...I'm not really sure kinsay nagpa-siugda ani nga practice (maybe Catholics ra sa Pinas I don't know)...
Some might say it's a form of penance, or people here call penitence, or even fasting for sins, as some might say. What does it mean?
A non-exhaustive background...(this might be an OT but it might help establish what's behind this RC practice)
Penance is, according to the Roman Catholic Church, the sacrament of reconciliation that "reestablishes a right relationship between God and a wayward Catholic." It is something the person does. Penance is "always, by its very nature, a liturgical action, and therefore an ecclesial and public action," (Catechism of the Catholic Church, par. 1482) and consists of a greeting from the priest, the reading of the Bible, "an exhortation to repentance," confession to a priest, the "acceptance of penance," absolution from the priest, and a "prayer of thanksgiving" (CCC 1480). The penitent person must willingly submit to its requirements of having a contrite heart, perform verbal confession, and be completely humble (CCC, 1450). It is part of the process that restores the person to God's grace (CCC 1468, 1496).
It includes works of reparation (CCC 1491). Will this include abstaining PORK consumption? as a form of reparation, as some of you say it is a fast for sin(s)?
Well whatever the case be, an individual's sin(s) can only be atoned for/forgiven not by observing (in a sense, obedience to) any rituals/practice/tradition but by only the ultimate atonement made by Jesus Christ on the cross.
