MANILA, Philippines—Two Asian actors are on board for filmmaker Adolf Alix’s new project.

Taiwanese superstar Ken Chu, who starred in Alix’s film “Batanes,” has agreed to co-produce the director’s next movie, which is about the plight of Filipino soldiers assigned in the Spratly Islands.

“We were in Batanes when I talked to Ken about the concept. He got back to me recently and said he has convinced other Chinese producers to invest in the new film,” Alix told Inquirer Entertainment on Tuesday.

The film, titled “Kalayaan,” will star Lao-Australian actor Ananda Everingham in the lead role. He appeared in the 2004 horror film, “Shutter.”

“Kalayaan” also features Filipino actors Joem Bascon and Arnold Reyes.

“We are currently in the process of securing permits. We hope to start filming soon,” said Alix.

    ‘Thank You Girls’

First-time director Charliebebs Gohetia recently finished filming an all-Visayan movie in Davao titled, “Thank You Girls,” which depicts the struggles of contestants in gay beauty pageants.

Gie Salonga, half-brother of celebrated singer-actress Lea Salonga, plays the lead role. The film will also feature first-time Visayan actors.

Gohetia was the editor of Dante Mendoza’s “Tirador” and “Foster Child.” He also wrote the script in Alix’s gay movie “Daybreak.”

“Thank You Girls” is about five gay beauty pageant veterans who travel from Davao City to Cagayan de Oro with the mission of conquering “the grandest competition of beauty, personality and brains” in the province.

“TYG” is produced by New York-based outfit Coral Consulting. It is set for release in July.

    ‘Resiklo’

Mark A. Reyes’ “Resiklo” has been invited to compete in the 10th Uding Far East Festival in Italy, which runs from April 19 to 26.

The sci-fi flick, which stars Sen. Bong Revilla, bagged the Best Picture Award at the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival. It tells the story of Crisval Sarmiento, a soldier who leads a part of the human resistance against invading aliens known as the Balangs. Because of limited resources, humans are forced to scavenge for any thing they could use as weapons to fight the invaders.

The film will also be screened at the Puchon International Fantastic Festival in Korea in July.

    ‘Balikbayan Box’

Mes de Guzman’s “Balikbayan Box” will represent the country in the Festival of Independent Cinema in Barcelona, Spain this month, according to the film’s assistant director, Noel “Tarik” Montano.

It will also compete in a film festival in Italy in June.

The film tells the story of children of overseas Filipino workers who send home balikbayan boxes, or parcels of gifts and provisions to their families.

According to Montano, also the production manager of “Balikbayan Box,” co-produced by Sampaybakod and Cinelarga Productions, has received invitations to compete in film festivals in California and Colorado in the United States.

    “Haw-Ang”

Bong Ramos’ “Haw-Ang,” a digital film that chronicles the struggles of a nun in her quest to educate Ifugao children, will compete in the Indianapolis International Film Festival, which runs from April 23 to May 3.

The film, which is endorsed by the Department of Education, received an Award of Excellence in Feature Film from The Accolade Film Awards in California in January. It is produced by Sizzling Gambas Productions Inc.

Ramos said his next project, about organ donors in the country, is currently on the drawing board.

    ‘When Timawa Meets Delgado’

Ray Defante Gibraltar’s “When Timawa Meets Delgado” is being screened at the ongoing 21st Singapore International Film Festival.

“Timawa” tackles the plight of people who take up nursing courses with the end in view of working abroad.
