that's a big question Mcmurills. since we can't identify if our dog is already had a heartworm. unless if the dog undergo bypass operations and checked if there are worms clogs on heart veins of your dog. that's why its better to prevent it.

For those who haven't had their dogs checked for heartworm yet, it is important you go to your vet and have them administer a heartworm test. This should be done yearly. If it is negative, start on heartworm prevention. Please ask your vet what preventive medication would be best for your dog.
