The Digitimes yesterday reported that Lite-On IT is developing built-in Blu-ray Disc-(BD) ROM drives for the Microsoft Xbox 360. Today they are reporting that the BD-ROM drives will cost MS US$95-100, much higher than the the US$18-20 quoted for the current Xbox 360 DVD-ROM drives. They say that even if MS increase the price of new Blu-ray consoles it won't cover the cost of the new drive, meaning that they would have to sell the console at a loss.

Microsoft continues to deny the whole Blu-Ray support thing though.

“No. Lite-On is not manufacturing Blu-ray drives for Xbox 360. As we have stated, games are what are driving consumers to purchase game consoles and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster game available.

“For our customers who want a premium movie experience we offer the largest library of on-demand HD content available and the ability to play back DVDs in high definition.“
