Is there really rice shortage? I don't think so. Just last night, the news featured rice traders in Bulacan and Nueva Ecija. Sacks if not tons of rice are being repacked to kilos of rice to be distributed all over the country. This is just a manifestation that there is no rice shortage in the Philippines.

What the country is experiencing right now is increasing price of rice which is experienced all over the East Asian region. Since rice is our staple food, we still need to import rice even if we produce our own. As such, the rising price of rice necessarily affects the price of rice that we currently have. But that does not in any way mean that we have a looming crisis in rice shortage.

As early as now, the government is providing ample supply of rice all over the country by providing retailer trucks of NFA rice. As such, the people won't panic that they will have nothing to eat because there's plenty of rice supply anyway. Also, with the coming rainy season, the government is already negotiating with other countries so as to supply us with sufficient rice in the future. The concern on rice shortage is much more apparent than real, I should say.
