a solar flare, in which a small area above the solar surface suddenly roars to tens of millions of degrees, throwing off a surge of radiation that can cause communications blackouts, disable satellites, etc... The other event is a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), in which billions of tons of charged particles escape from the Sun's halo, the corona, at millions of miles an hour. When these reach Earth, they squash the magnetic field lines and dump trillions of watts of power into Earth's upper atmosphere thus overloading power lines, causing massive blackouts and destroy delicate instruments on anything in Earth orbit.... The fourth most powerful flare happend on October 2003

kuwang ra ang characterization. pero nindot ang drama like the scene when Tom Cruise says "You hate me You hate me? Fine. But I love you!" Nice, the tension between Ray and Robbie.

    Mostly nada-og sad sa SOUND.

i haven't read the novel by h.g. wells as i am not much of a reader but i think the movie still stands out from most "alien-invasion-themed" movies.

one thing is that it's based on a classic novel by a respected author. two, dakota fanning was there. that kid is still 11 years old but her CV (curriculum vitae) is remarkably incomparable to lindsay lohan's or hilary duff's -- that's cinematically speaking, so wipe out the disposable recording careers of the latter two. three, the ending is only appreciated once you start to think about it. no matter how advanced "the others" are, they will still have something lacking. i like how the movie portrayed the "Paramecium scenes". if you're a biology major, i'm sure you'd appreciate it.

as for tom cruise, it's not his best movie i think but it's undeniable his beauty is kinda timeless. he's already 40-something but he still looks...nice.

it was entertaining, but left a lot of questions too. why did the aliens come? what did they want? why did they suck the blood of the humans? to what purpose? these weren't really explained. instead, the film veered to parenting issues. geez. and yes, there's that niggling question as to why a super intelligent civilization who built and deployed the tripods a million years ago did not do a little more research about conditions on the planet before sending its invasion force.

i like the unforgettable image of a train, every coach on fire, roaring through a station.

This is what I like about the movie. It's really about the issue of Tom Cruise being a cynical and even a bitter person because he is a bad father and got divorced. I liked the emotional tension between him and Robbie when Robbie wants to leave and fight. Maybe it suggests that people in the family who have a gap may regain bonding - in times of turmoil when all they have is each other.
