It would depend what kind of server do want to set-up. File / Data storage Server, Application Server (server for hosting online database such as SQL or MySQL), Domain Name Server (DNS).
Windows based:
O.S. : Windows Server 2005 (don't know if this is the latest)
Hardware: Workstation/Server set-up (e.g. Intel Xeon / AMD Phenom (maybe no need to overclock because your
server would run 24/7), a high quality MOBO preferably with solid caps (for endurance), 2Gb to 4Gb of Ram
- depends on your application, ), No need to have a high end GPU (unless you want to play DX9 games on
your server), Size of HDD will depend on your needs - but I suggest you use RAID 5 set-up
(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redunda...ependent_disks), an efficient PSU (branded) and a
casing with a good cooling system.
LAN Set-up: Preferably 1Gigabit Ethernet LAN set-up (you can also use a Wifi G/N router if you want to connect
wireless devices such as laptops to your network). Gigabit Ethernet LAN needs CAT6 cable.
