Bunye: Cruz ‘exonerates’ President

Archbishop Oscar Cruz’s admission that he has no witness to directly link President Arroyo to illegal gambling payoffs confirms that the Chief Executive never benefited from jueteng at all, a Palace statement said Saturday.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye reacted to Cruz’s pronouncements at the Senate jueteng investigation where he virtually exonerated the President.

The lack of new testimony prompted Senators Miriam Defensor Santiago and Richard Gordon to call for an end to the hearings.

"There is no eyewitness against President Arroyo. There is one alleged eyewitness against the President’s son and brother-in-law, but the credibility of the eyewitness has been attacked by a retired general," Santiago said. "In any event, the case against President Arroyo appears to be closed."

Gordon agreed with his colleagues who want to end the investigation and forward any evidence gathered to the Office of the Ombudsman, which is conducting its investigation.

The President herself reiterated the other day that she never profited from jueteng nor did she receive election campaign support from illegal gambling operators, contrary to Cruz’s allegation.

Bunye earlier branded as baseless and malicious the allegations of Cruz, saying they are part of a plot to destabilize the government.

He said Cruz might have been unwittingly used as a pawn by power groups to bring down the government by any means.
