Dont get carried away by people who have a golden chip from a certain batch, most wolfdales hit the wall at 4Ghz with stock cooling since the voltage increase is quite huge after that if you want to keep the chip alive for a long time you then limit your self at 1.295v as MAX,regardless of whats the max voltage on intels white papers.

No, with the current prices right now AMD has no chance in any segment compared to intel even on stock speeds, overclocking makes the gap wider.



HTPC(video decoding)
-HTPC is an HTPC, it needs to be cool and dead silent my ideal HTPC processor is a stock E2160 paired with a videocard with onboard HD decoders like the HD35xx series or the 8400

Gaming
-Gaming on a desktop, With the current games right now a dualcore processor will be good enough the E8500 will be faster than the Q6600.
E8500-8 , Q6600-1

Ordinary Office use (internet, word , exel etc..)
-E2160 wins here



Video Encoding (quads win here)
-Actually depending on the efficiency of the encoder, assumed the E8500 is running at 4Ghz and the Q6600 is at 3.2Ghz, the E8500 might come out faster.

All in all its personal preference, As for me why did i choose a Q6600.. since i came from singlecore ( A64 3700+ ) during its release, since my choice was a E6750 or a Q6600 the price difference of 3,000 made it quite obvious on what my purchase was..

But i love my Q6600 very much, and never looked back at those fancy 4Ghz dualcores.

and since.mag multitasking ka..juggling between photoshop.illustrator.corel..maybe premier or vegas...

a quad core wud serve you best.. the lowest end quad..the 1066mhz fsb xeon x3210 @ 2.13ghz or the entry level C2Q6600 @ 2.4ghz

both can reach 3.2ghz in thin air
