Go ahead let that arrogant northern city model your attitude and views, basin mosuhid and mapasipad-an mga importanteng butang sa 'progress' (kuno) kay basin mapareha nang syudara maupaw mga bukid and polluted na tubig.  You still didn't get it, our zoning is well planned here and our environment is well nurtured such that factories with excessive pollution are put on the wayside to other places.  You are not exquisite enough to notice what we really have in mind for our city, but just to give you small crumbs of hint, elegant condominium units are mushrooming here, and multinational companies are starting to notice and putting up offices, while still trying to nurture the culture here.  This city is groomed as a Global Service Center while the dirty and excesively polluting factories that do not pass the standards go to other places, CDO for one kay gimodel man kaya nila city nyo.  The city's natural geographic advantage will put it in the forefront of the EAGA region and globally; a clean, orderly city and a formidable tourist destination with attractions that no rival can deny.

I can assure you that Davao is not following the 'footstep' of Cebu or Manila and does not want to, we always tend to see the mistakes that you don't even notice.  People here by nature, being pioneers, are independent minded enough to implement landmark moves that are oftentimes the first in the country.  What you shallowly interpret as slowness is actually a careful step of strengthening the city's basic potentials.

I notice that you seem to have a 'talangka' attitude nga ganahan mosira sa isigkatawo para intawon makasaka ka.  Attitudes like yours are what causes the ugliness in this country.

have you heard about a popular davaoeño legislator who said that davao should not focus on bimp-eaga since this for small time players? to seme degree i could somehow see some truth in his views. i wonder what your stand regarding this matter is.

a formidable tourist destination with attractions no rival can enjoy is such a nice phrase, perks your ego up a bit eh? im gonna ask you this... what attractions are you talking about? nature? palawan is miles ahead of you buddy, and palawan doesnt have problems with mindanao stigma, sure, dos palmas is there but its not as "dangerous" as mindanao. davao as a destination is losing its edge to bohol, cebu palawan and boracay. im no stranger to davao, and sorry but i enjoyed my nature trips in palawan more than what i savored in davao.

now if youre talking about natural attractions, forests, caves, marine life etc etc. thats in close proximity to a city offering modern ambiance and comfort. have you heard about the cebu-bohol corridor? now the philippines most promising travel package. i wouldnt be biased and i know that most would agree that cebu-bohol package is better than the davao-samal offer. with mactan as an added attraction, could i even get wrong?

I can assure you that Davao is not following the 'footstep' of Cebu or Manila and does not want to, we always tend to see the mistakes that you don't even notice. People here by nature, being pioneers, are independent minded enough to implement landmark moves that are oftentimes the first in the country.
I can assure you that Davao is not following the 'footstep' of Cebu you dont need to emphasize it buddy, with the rate of your growth which i described previously as SLOW, i can say that your are definitely not following the footstep of cebu, im just so sorry for some people in davao who are trying to get a good and decent living outside davao city and suffer the pain of living far from their families, because there is not enough jobs available for them in davao city (and i thought this only happens to OFW's, now we have a local version)

and what landmark moves are you talking about that you said are oftentimes the "firsts" in the country? can you privide details or you just grabbed in from your ceiling? could you at least put some sense in what you are talking about here? i would love to know those "landmark moves"

some people from davao like to talk as if their city is the center of the universe, that they are the cleanest city and everything else outside their city boundary is D-I-R-T-Y. im not about to resort to mudslinging but you need a good shot of self realization in what you like to harp about. you like to dwell on the dirt and environmental degradation of other cities and put yourself on the pedestal of environmental protection. as if your city is exempted from urban problems and dirt....

some dose of self examination for davaoeños

Davao City trash end up in Davao Gulf

Mountains of garbage from Davao City have been swamping the nearby island of Samal, less than 2 km away, threatening marine life in the Davao Gulf.

"Everyday, we are confronted by mounds of floating garbage from the sea," Island Garden City of Samal Mayor Rogelio Antalan said in an environment summit here.

"We spend several hours a day just cleaning them up," he added.

Antalan said the garbage come from Davao City and reach as far as the Talikud Island several kilometers away.

"Lately, we're thinking of deploying boats to clean garbage up. But when will this garbage dumping end?" he said.

results sent to Manila to determine the cause of what could have been

at least for cebu, it never claimed to be the cleanest in everything but it is trying not to be as dirty as manila, unlike davao, who likes to dwell on her cleanliness when some issues like the ones posted above say otherwise... false claim, empty hope i should say!

Things have been going on well on this thread and I could sense cooperation among forumers here and in fact am enjoying it, until you came. You keep dragging down our place with your ugly, obnoxious fashion that you cannot be put up anymore. It's seeming hopeless case with whatever malicious motive you have against people here such that i'm concerned if I reply to any of your useless argument, it would result to having the discussion reduced to OT.

After this I will not entertain your irrelevant argument.

Frankly, I'm not one who is interested at convincing skeptics like you, but for information's sake I could post some citations given to Davao. I will not be addressing to you when I say this because your motive is lacking in credibility to me, but I encourage other Cebuanos here to post also their landmark moves as I will be doing it now and live up to the real purpose of this thread before this xanor came to muddle things up:

-First in the country, and third in the world next to USA and Canada to adopt the 911 system. Unlike typical emergency numbers, it uses a modified computerized geographic and information system called ECAD in cooperation with the local power company here, replete with supports including K9 units.

    - First local government unit to pass what is known as the Davao City Children's Welfare Code specifically designed for the welfare of the children and their rights to services, Protection, and other privileges.

-Passed the Davao City Investment incentives Code in 1994, the first ordinance in the country to grant incentives to investors over and above the Philippine Omnibus Investment code.

-First city to seriously implement the Act promoting the Salt Iodization Nationwide (ASIN)

-Passed the City Ordinance requiring mall operators to provide sits for salesladies, first of its kind in the country.

    - Pioneered the creation of BIMP EAGA. Your quote about the legislator regarding BIMP EAGA would sum up the difference on how Davao deals with the Mindanao region not in the same way Cebu or Manila did, for your sole information. Unlike the rest of the country accusing about imperial Manila and Bohol accusing about imperial Cebu, Davao was selfless in implementing the EAGA region, and it is disheartening to note that the ignorants in some cities attempt to drag down Davao instead despite its selfless effort. You didn't get it, the legislator may not say it, but I am not wrong in saying that Davao will be eyed not just as a Service Center for the EAGA (rather than monopolizing factory jobs that may be provided to fellow mindanaoan cities), but rather GLOBALLY, which is why the city is ranked as 5th in Human Resource for cities of the future. Your malicious and narrow perception still didn't get it; unlike imperial Manila or imperial Cebu as viewed by other visayan regions, the BIMP EAGA views the WHOLE mindanao area as a common force with facilities spread throughout Mindanao cities, and Davao will rightfully be Mindanao's and EAGA's Global Service Center to the World.

-Most competitive city in the Philippines, 2001, 2003, 2005 by the Asian Institute of Management

-Most Outstanding Business Chamber in the Country awarded to Davao City Chamber of Commerce (DCCCII) 2003

-Most outstanding Peace and order Council, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005

-Most Peaceful City in Southeast Asia, 1998 - 2005

    -Best Police Office, 1999-2005

-Cleanest and Greenest city, highly Urbanized Category. when I mention about the cleanliness here, it is not hollow but rather a fact. What you cited are cases that are, as much as possible, immediately addressed by the local populace that is why you have read it courtesy of the vigilance of people and media here. We personally witness how swift the immediate dispatchment of investigation followed when that spill occured in the river, because such news do not occur often here, and are immedately addressed into. I suggest when it comes to clean cities before you sermon others, just keep mum to avoid your embarassment.

-Most outstanding Water Utility in Asia, 1996, 1997, 1998. WHO research cite that the quality of water here is 2nd best next only to Netherlands.

-Most Livable City in the Country. Unlike other 'vanity' awarding bodies that base their results solely for the interests of the 'have's', the citation for Davao is definitely sensible & based with fairness to general sectors of society.

The city had achieved these without having a main shallow reason to merely compete with any city; it just does what it can achieve because people here are innately independent and pioneer-minded since the time of their hardy kins that come from various regions of the country and settled in this city.

Without my addressing to xanor, it would be interesting for Cebuanos here to also post the landmarks and citations of their city, so that both Davao and Cebu will be appreciative of it and relive the real purpose of this thread.

wow! im wondering why most of your "citations" are stucked during the 90's and abruptly stopped mid 2000's. but anyway, you know it more than what people here can speculate, but i am pretty sure you cant avoid people here to have some speculations at the back of their minds...

but anyway... you might want to see cebu's, so here it is, have fun reading

    * Gender-Responsive Governance Cebu City - 2003 - Outstanding Welfare Services. reported incidents of VAW have been reduced to only two out of ten women in 2002. Bantay Banay is also being replicated in as many as 65 LGUs all over the country.

    * Partnerships for Poverty Alleviation - The City Government initiated the Cebu Urban Basic Services Programme in 1988 with the support of UNICEF, the Presidential Commission on the Urban Poor and the cooperation of several national government agency programmes as well local and national NGOs. The establishment of the Local Government Code in 1992 greatly increased the autonomy and authority of city government and lays the foundation for institutionalization and replication of the Cebu poverty alleviation policies and programmes in other cities.

    * 1995 - Trailblazing Health Programs and Services / Providing Emergency Medical Service Gawad Galing Pook - The Emergency Medical Service of Cebu City addressed the need of city residents and neighboring towns for professional response to medical and rescue emergencies. The emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF), a partner NGO of the city of Cebu, runs this program.

    * CEDF-IT - the cebu educational development for information technology - CEDF-IT was formed by a consortium of industry, academe, and government stakeholders in the ICT industry with the objective of developing the human resources required by the industry. The CEDF-IT model has eventually inspired other regions to set up their own

    * kalakbay awardee for best tourism council - cebu city tourism commission 1990, 1993, 1995,

    * kalakbay awardee for best destination - cebu 1990, 1993, 1996

    * total number of foreign and domestic tourists in cebu are greater than any other tourist destination in th country, making cebu as the country's top tourist destination.

    * Tholons Globalization Services places Cebu City in the fourth place behind Indian cities Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune in its list of Top 50 emerging cities for outsourcing in the world (2007)

    * Mckinsey and Company recently ranked cebu as the most preferred city for outsourcing and offshoring work in the country. the McKinsey report is contained in the Business Process Association of the Philippines’ (BPA/P) Outsourcing and Offshoring Road Map 2010. (2007)

    * conde nast traveller consistently ranks cebu as one of the top ten destinations in asia (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007)

    * total bank deposits in cebu is the highest outside the nations capital, is also has the most number of banks outside manila. Outside Metro Manila, Cebu recorded the largest bank deposits of P134.225 billion or 4.5 percent of the total.

    * the first intelligent traffic light system in the country was installed first in cebu during the early 90's. no other city in the country has installed this kind of traffic lights as extensive as in cebu where practically ALL traffic lights are sensorized.

    * forget the old mag that folded up for almost a decade ago, a more recent and reliable survey was conducted and released last year by a group of foreign investors... cebu's position in the survey? number 8 in asia

    * the same survey also put cebu in the second place for DEVELOPMENT AND PROMOTION... no other philippine city made it to the top ten in this category.... their judging criteria

    • Sectors targeted for inward investment
    • Financial support available to investors
    • Non-financial investment support available to investors
    • Major infrastructure and urban planning projects
    • Environmental strategies and grants
    • Percentage of GDP allocated to FDI promotion

    * cebu also ranked 13th in the global city competitiveness report

    * cebu also initiated the establishment of a visitors and conventions bureau, the CVCB, which is now replicated in other parts or the country including davao.

most livable? is that still true up to now? the mag that ranked davao as the "most livable" is gone for almost a decade ago, i doubt if their ranking would still hold true if they did not fold up. and the last ranking that they made only put davao 2 notches higher than cebu, not a very big lead i should say.

and its quite hilarious to see you say other "vanity" award giving bodies which i think is partly suggesting the ranking that FDI released for last year. FYI, this is their judging criteria for the 2007 top quality of life

    Quality of life

    • Best housing areas
    • Average residential property purchase price
    • Average residential rental costs
    • Public health care facilities
    • Private health care facilities
    • Leading schools
    • Leading international schools
    • Cultural heritage
    • Environmental heritage
    • Incidents of crime per 1000 people
    • Number of soldiers and police personnel (% of general population)
    • Number of foreigners becoming residents in past two years

    the judging panel?

David Kinnear, President of DDC HRO, a provider of business process outsourcing solutions, in New York
James Ku, Manager at consultancy firm Tractus-Asia Ltd in Shangha
Anupam Prakash, Asia Pacific leader, at HR consultancy firm Hewitt Associates in India
Lawrence Yeo, CEO of international consultancy firm AsiaBIZ Strategy in Singapore

now tell me, is this a vanity survey? and only for the haves? dig deeper, you look like you dont know what you are talking about...

not surprising for cebu, she cornered the 7th place in asia, davao? not even in the top 10. the other phillipine city that made it on the top 10 for the quality of life is quezon city at 10th place.

i know its a bitter pill to swallow, but your much hyped davao as the most livable city in the country now is too passe, OMFG that survey was done 8 or 5 years ago, recent surveys and rankings now points to sunny cebu  and its all good!

Cebu economy ‘envy’ of all RP -- PCCI chief

THE Philippine economy is heading toward a bright future, but there is more room for improvement if the government and the private sector will strengthen their partnership, according to a business leader.

“This year started with much optimism, not only for Philippine business but for the general welfare of the entire country, as well,” said Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Donald Dee during the opening of the InTourPreneur 2006 last Wednesday.

He said last year ended on a high note, with a 400-percent increase in investments in stocks, treasury bills and bonds. The stock market also became one of the best performers in Asia, he added.

    Performance

He said the peso performed well than other currencies in Asia and was fifth on the list of best performers worldwide.

“Undeniably, all signs pointed towards a better 2006—for the economy and, therefore, for Philippine business,” said Dee.

“However, while we are encouraged by these positive developments, there are still much to be done for business to improve,” he added.

During the opening of the three-day InTourPreneur 2006 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, Dee also praised Cebu for its “robust and teeming economy.”

“Cebu—with its robust and teeming economy—has become the envy of businessmen all over the country,” he said.

Dee said that a cooperation between the government and the private sector is the “only way” that the entire country will be able to reap the benefits of economic growth.

    Downstream

“We need to ensure that the beneficial downstream effects will be felt nationwide, and not limited to just a particular segment of the population,” he said.

According to Dee, government and private sector partnership must cover critical issues that are indispensable to further improve the business climate and Philippine economy.

These issues are reforms in the power sector, good governance, international cooperation and trade, small and medium enterprises development, wages and corporate social responsibility.

Dee also mentioned investment promotion as a critical factor in strong economic growth.

“Alone on the domestic front, we do not have sufficient funds to fuel economic growth. We need to turn to our trade and investment allies for further investment expansion—most especially in the critical sunrise industries,” he said.

According to Dee, the country’s sunrise industries are tourism, business process outsourcing, information technology, mining, logistics, telecommunication, transportation and construction.

“(But) we need to project a stable political climate and a consistent implementation of laws and procedures to overcome the marketing challenge in promoting our country as a vital investment hub,” he said. (JBN)
