To tripwire: You should be careful when making statements about the improper grammar being used by the "putis and itoms" in the States. Have someone who is fluent in English read your post and critique YOUR grammar...You won't be quite so confident after seeing how many errors are present. I can recommend some good books on improving one's English grammar, if you wish.

So true! I really really do not like shortcuts oi. Unlike rodsky here...ako simple lang ang phone BUT as with ALL phones now... there is T9. People should learn how to use it.Originally Posted by rodsky
i read some of the replies here though did not read the whole thread anymore. if you have problems with the pronounciation of some words then visit www.m-w.com seach for the word then click on the speaker icon
what the others suggested are all good.
here's my story: (i know i'm being wordy but we're all here trying to learn right?)
i used to read books a lot. started on 2nd grade albeit sporadically but became a total bookworm when i was in 5th grade. got obsessed with a certain movie. i watched it over and over again to the point that i was saying all the lines along with the actors. never been a fan of tagalog movies that for a period of about 3 years i refused to watch any tagalog movies except occasionally on tv. have to say my tagalog, which has always been weak, suffered.
i did get to overcome that weakness. my tagalog is far from perfect but i am able to speak without accent most of the time unless when i'm emotionally charged, then the accent comes out. i overcame this weakness by talking a lot with my friends from manila.
in my own quest of learning mandarin i did get to notice something. watching movies/series will help you with your listening skills and in understanding. it also helps us in terms of pronounciation by letting us know how it is pronounced correctly but does not give us the ability to say it correctly. so what i do sometimes, when i have the patience i actually pause what i'm watching and repeat the words. which of course rarely happens as i'm too lazy to.
there is something important i've learned in my quest of learning to speak mandarin fluently that i'd like to impart to everyone. i have friends who can speak mandarin and fookien fluently. i know i can learn a lot from it if i engage in conversation with them using the said language. however i am unable to do so because i am shy about my skills, with the pronounciation and the limited vocabulary. hence, the idea that it is better to expand your vocabulary first and practice with someone who is about your level that way you will feel more at ease. something even better is to practice it with a language partner whom you have no choice but to converse with the person in the language you are trying to learn as it is the only way of understanding each other. this idea is brought about by the fact that i am more comfortable conversing in chinese with parents of friends who have difficulty speaking our dialect.
so if you need a language partner try the website below. got to warn you that sometimes it works differently. like in my case. my partner helps me with mandarin and i help him with his english. we converse on both languages in order to understand each other better. it's a bit awkward at first but the idea is both of you are good at something and the other is learning something from the other so you are literally walking in each other's shoes. so enjoy and hope this is helpful to everyone.

note: i know my english is far from being impeccable. also i'm too lazy to proofread what i just posted, so feel free to make corrections if you want. that way others will be able to learn from it.

Read English newspapers out loud. If possible have someone correct you.
