There is no such thing as a portable program. Even Java and interpreted scripts need programs that are written and compiled specifically for the operating system and machine architecture that you intend it to run.

Sakto. What is the meaning of portability? I think you need a client inorder to use it. Just like a web browser (client) inorder to access a web page.

I had no problem in putting my svn repository on an external hard disk. I can access it on both my Linux and Open Solaris OS.

Ah, so you need a repository that you can carry anywhere with you. Try Mercurial. No need for setting up a server, and it's lightweight too.

You can check it out at http://www.selenic.com/mercurial/wiki/

    Enjoy!

    Here's what I did.

I also used this kind of setup on my Solaris and Ubuntu OS. But I've never tried this on windows.

    1. Download the windows svn standalone client (svn-win32-1.4.5.zip).
    2. Extract the file on the USB disk.
    3. If the repository is existed, goto step 4.
3a. Create a local repo into the USB or any portable drive. For example,
    %SVN_HOME%\bin\svnadmin create f:\myrepo.
3b. Create necessary directories (i.e. trunk, braches, tags)
3c. Import the directories into the repo. For example, %SVN_HOME%\bin\svn import --message "Initial Import" repo file:///f:/myrepo.
3d. Create a working copy. For example, %SVN_HOME%\bin\svn co file:///f:/myrepo/trunk repo
    4. You can commit, add, update, or any svn commands into your USB or any portable drive.
    5. As a side note, the repo can be used in any operating system (Linux and Open Solaris).

    Note :
SVN_HOME is where your svn client is installed/extracted.
