ditto on this... it all matter on your preferences which includes your shooting style on most situations. nevertheless, starting it with the D40/D40x, well you can never go wrong.

one thing is for certain, both canon and nikon are good cameras. it's a choice of whether which is more comfortable for you. as what twinjet suggested that you should try it and feel it, then do it.

personally, i have tried both cameras. i made a choice of the grip factor.

i suggest you try holding the cameras as if you were shooting and compare both to the comfortability of your hands. then check the features. that's the time you'll know what brand of camera to buy and use.

I think I'll go for d40x. This will be my back-up camera. The main being the d80. I think I will be comfortable with it coz I've been with Nikon since Manual...It will not take long for me to adapt re menu, grip etc. Thanks guys for ur comments.

There you go... your a current D80 user so its actually the best choice.
They have similar shutter and sensor. and both use SD not CF it should be your best back up.
Battery is different you need to buy another type.

    You'll love the D40X ...
