Cause of problems

"To GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo), I beg of you, resign now, for the good of the country. Because you are the cause of all our problems, the grave poverty, the corruption, you are the cause of all these. If you really love the country, resign, because if I come out with the rest of the tapes that I entrusted with worthy brothers, you may never be able to turn back," said Ong.

"The people know that you are not the President. They know that you are an illegitimate president, so resign for the sake of the country," said Ong.Saying his revelation may cost him his life, Ong sought the protection of the Church for his safety.

"Now that I have come out, I am dead meat. They could do everything to me, and worse, they could even kill me," said Ong.

After answering a few questions, Ong was whisked away by opposition politicians in a dark green van. As his vehicle drove out of Metroclub's gates, some 200 opposition supporters cheered and chanted a call for Ms Arroyo to resign.

After he disappeared, news reports said that Ong had holed up at the San Carlos Seminary on Edsa. Several dozen politicians went to the seminary, along with reporters, but none of the opposition spokespersons were able to confirm Ong's presence there.

Worst crisis. Heres an interesting write up by Luis V. Teodoro.

It is true that the present crisis is the worst that has ever afflicted the Arroyo administration since 2001. It is in fact the worst crisis any administration since Marcos' has ever experienced. But it may not necessarily lead to the current administration's removal.

Given, however, the current state of its credibility and support, its incorrigible incapacity to achieve much of anything, its increasingly oppressive character, and the runaway corruption metastasizing within it, its surmounting the present crisis will not mean stability until 2010.

The likelihood is that, as its failures accumulate and as its legitimacy remains doubtful at best, it will be besieged by crisis after crisis in the years to come. Any one of those crises can lead to its ouster, assuming that the points of differences among the groups opposed to it--among them the question of how to remove Ms Arroyo and who will succeed her--are resolved.

This is an administration so damaged that its ouster can only be a matter of time.
