questioning someone of his basis is not hostility, but the manner in which you worded your questions is. you say dont have a problem but you act like you have something stuck up your ass. i really hope for both our sakes you dont make yourself my problem.

    thats good to know.

like I said... based on personal opinion and observation.

Yeah.. Of course I agree with you that people upgrade their cards to gain performance...

But... not ALL upgrade based on performance ALONE... some do it to take advantage of new features... (in this case its DX10).

If you really want proof of this... just read around the tomshardware forums and you will find people who bought Geforce 8 series cards to be able to play games like Crysis at DX10 w/ Vista. You may not agree with it personally... but other people like those in the forums are upgrading because of Crysis... and of course you need Vista to run Crysis in DX10.

With regards to DX10 not being doable in XP ...i suggest you read articles .. specifically on GPU memory virtualization. Cos last time I checked Nvidia was having problem implementing GPU memory virtualization in the Dx10 spec so Windows made that feature optional. That would technically allow DX10 to run in XP.

(Do correct me If this info is wrong for my benefit and for others here also and I would gladly retract my post)

The way this is going... its gonna turn into another of those classic Istorya.net arguments where I say one thing and you contradict it.. then the cycle goes on and on until the whole thing goes off topic then mods will take care of it....so to save everyone the hassle... I suggest we don't go down that path..

I presented my opinions... you objected to it... Thats perfectly fine and I respect that.... hope we get back to the topic.

PS. I've no intention to start heated arguments here or cause anyone any trouble. Everyone have a great Sunday!

To highend series 8's yes, not the 8600 series as you said earlier.

The latest versions of Direct3D, namely, Direct3D 10 and Direct3D 9Ex, are exclusive to Windows Vista. This is because there were extensive changes in the Windows graphics architecture, and in particular the introduction of the Windows Display Driver Model. This redesign of the graphics infrastructure for Windows Vista supports virtualizing graphics hardware to multiple applications and services such as the Desktop Window Manager, in contrast to the exclusive access afforded to DirectX applications on Windows XP. Both Direct3D 9Ex and Direct3D 10 rely on the WDDM infrastructure and WDDM drivers.
That is quoted off wikipedia as i cannot find the same article that is found on M$ site, I too believe before that DX10 is more than a marketing gimmick but after seeing reliable sources and even reading up on some of those DX10 emulators i then believed that DX10 is a technology exclusive for Vista, if one were to remake XP to run DX10 then the end result will be making XP into vista.

I dont see this as a heated argument at all, but yes we are already out of topic might as well return to the original one.

Alright... I was talking about that time when the 8600 series was new (Around April 2007) and was priced at 199-229usd.

Everyone was talking about this being the NEXT BIG midrange card that sells like hotcakes ... ala Geforce 4 Ti , Geforce 6600, Geforce 7600. No one THEN knew the actual performance of this card so everyone was harping at how this would be their upgrade card to support the much hyped Dx10 back then.

My opinion is that M$ used Dx10 and Dx10 games like Crysis (which wasn't out yet) to push Vista sales and Nvidia was in it also for the ride.

Nope. Get an HD3870 paired with x38 or x48 board you might wanna add another HD3870 for a crossfire setup later on.

    I don't get your point.
You say all the BLAH's about 8600 being thought of as the NEXT BIG thing. But you conclude that M$ used DX10 and DX10 titles to market Vista? What gives?

Let's put it this way, if DX10 will work with XP as easily as you said it would be, then M$ would have reused the XP kernel to implement DX10 instead of rewriting it to make Vista. That would have saved them a lot of time and production costs. Even unsa ka outrageous ang XP, it still is the most successful Desktop operating system of our time, so Microsoft couldn't risk killing the OS mentioned.

It just so happened na, it was part of their roadmap, and all they had to do was implement their plan. DX10 was part of the package, and you have to live with it. Technology has to continue. I'm not saying Vista is any better than XP, but it was time for a change, but not everyone was ready.

    @threadstarter:

Hm, as they have said, it depends. If you need some future proof products, at wait for another quarter, then decide.
