^^Murag lisod man siguro ang aikido sa MMA tournaments because aikido itself is a passive martial art. Di ba bawal man pud ang locks sa MMA? Correct me if I'm wrong though. Other than that, aikido is defensive by nature and is not aggressive.

MMA is not the parameter of the martial arts
it is the parameter of the fighting prowess of the MMA athlete. its is a very big misnomer to even call MMA a martial art since a martial art is the crystallization of a specific culture. It is a repository of code of ethics, tradition, mind set and of course physical fighting techniques of a specific country of origin.
the MMA on the other hand is a fighting sport where athletes " fight". there is no such thing as Karate fighter or aikido fighter since this is not the intention of the 2 martial arts. The MMA athlete maybe the deadliest fighter but that doesn't qualify him as a martial artist.
Martial art isn't about fighting. it is about developing the person through the physical regimen of training, whereas MMA concerns itself with developing the " complete fighter"
well said freeflyer....
as what my sensei told me when i studied aikido, "aikido is a martial art, not a sport!".
please dont get me wrong, i have nothig against these martial arts, i whish i could learn these types too.
let us try to imagine many years back when the masters if these arts are yet to discover these kind of martial arts.
aikido master originally come from the traditional samurai warrionr right? where he learns jujitsu, sword and stick fighting. Same as Karate, Tai chi however is diffirent in the sense that it comes from the old warriors from china, but in essence the same because they are warriors defending their country, right?
All im saying is the practicality of these martial arts are placed aside because today we are not fighting to the death, or to defend out county from invaders
thats why it is called a "sport".
take karate for example, my shihan(sensei) taught me that karate as a sport is focused more on speed and not on the its deadly blows (strenght)as you deliver it to a real life and death situation(street fight).
as for aikido, we will never know its true capacity until you meet someone on the street and acctually wants to hurt you, as well as tai chi because it is built more today on exercises and not the practical side if it.
If you consider MMA is not a martial arts, I beg to disagree,
they say that necessity is the invention of all things. Well the founder of these Martial arts came from diffirent martial arts too. Would that not qualify them as the real MMA fighter in their time?
jiguro kano (founder of judo) came from practising ju jitsu, and sword fighting in japan, for me hes a perfect MMA fighter, but you wont consider him as a artial artist?
how can an aikidoist join MMA nga sa rules palang daan sa MMA for sure ma break jud na sa aikidoist... the way mu away ang aikiido bali ug lock bya... thats the way they fight.
Let's take note that MMA is a sport as how we watch and see it. It is bound by rules and the aim is to find who's the better fighter, or maybe the luckier one. Though martial arts mean "The art of fighting", because it's bound by rules, MMA events falls under the sports category.
Real fights doesn't have rules, real fights are survival.
real martial arts is bahalag unsay porma nimo basta buhi ka ug na overcome nimo imo opponent.  in real life, wai mu uwang wai magbantay.  so if you wanna choose what martial art, find a martial art that is pang all-around. Pwede with weapon pwede without weapon, pwede standing pwede sitting pwede ground. pwede mupatay pwede dili lang pero imo dakpun without any issues of human rights...so if somewhere in your martial art life you decide to go to MMA then you use only the techniques that are fit for sports...
aikido lang ako... walay mosupak ... dli ko nahan mabun-og![]()
He be a martial athlete or a martial artist, one should spend more time in training. Face your uke, nage, partner, attacker, defender, whatever and not the monitor. hehe. Sheeesh I am facing a monitor! Bye!
korek.  whatever martial art, practice practice practice practice practice until muscle memory nalang. by the time someone attacks you automatic response nalang dayon sa imong body. dili na kelangan mu think.  bro nay similar sa aikido. look around for aikijutsu/aikijujutsu...that is more versatile than aikido. you can fight standing sitting lying on the ground with or without weapons. also includes the joint locks of aikido.Originally Posted by aquafire
