As a "foreigner" who visits your country, it's actually a term I do not really appreciate, I would prefer the use of "guest" or "tourist". I don't consider people that come to my country on holiday as "Foreigners". i want to treat them with respect and will hope they show the same back to me.

yeah, to be more politically correct, we should use "foreign tourist" or "foreign guest", instead of "foreigner". but don't take it personally. most people here are just used to saying that, thinking it's just a short-cut word and thus the same meaning, and not mindful of the perception it connotes.(im also guilty of that)...

this is another funny story: i am just reminded of a long time ago that whenever my childhood neighbors spot a caucasian foreign tourist, he/she would immediately shout, "amerkano, amerkano!!!". even if that person is an australian or german...toink!

Example no 1. My g/f booked a room in a hotel in Davao for ourselves and her father who was with us at the time. it was more of a suite so I was going to be sleeping outside on the sofa at the time. She was quoted a price of 3000pesos at the time. We walked into the hotel after a bus journey of 8 hours and she went to reception to get the keys. The receptionist saw me and said the price was 4800pesos for the room. I said that we had been quoted a price of 3000peosos. Her reply to me was " You are a foreigner, you have to pay more" This is not the sort of thing that you say to someone coming to your country, no matter where you are. I promptly walked out with my bags and told her why we were not staying. They lost our business and a few other peoples as well. We went elsewhere, even though it was more expensive.

that is a good criticism and worth discussing...
but you could have just called the attention of the supervisor or manager in a reasonable manner and asserted your customer rights and still get a favorable outcome...besides, they might have the policy of higher rates for foreign guest, or, locals accompanied by a foreign guest.

but i think this practice has been discouraged already by the Tourism Bureau...it's just that sometimes the travel agencies, tour guides, or whoever referred a foreign guest to a certain hotel sometimes get a "cut", that is why for foreign travellers, they get higher rates...(and this is not to accuse your g/f for that matter)

Example 2 Porters. They are useful and I use them but can you please be more patient. Especially at the airport. An example is the last time I arrived at Cebu airport, I had not seen my g/f for 8 months. I want her to be the first person I see and communicate with after customs. Instead, on my way out to her, I am surrounded by porters who want to carry my bags while I am trying to give her a hug!!! Very annoying. Either let people who are waiting for their guests to arrive come into the arrivals section or make the porters stand further back. I don't mind tipping them or letting them take my bags, just give me space!!!

did u tell the porters to just wait first because it is somehow annoying? actually, you can...don't be too cautious on telling them that coz maybe you think it would hurt their sensibilities or fearful of raising some eyebrows...if i were in your shoes, i would tell them to "give me only one porter" and "give me space first" in a polite manner without raising your voice...

Survival,yes and that would need money.You go to other country as DH for survival because you dont have money.Whether we like to accept it or not thats the truth.You ask who are trying to work to other country.They woud say "Life is miserable here,I could not feed my family if Im just earning like this".when you have more money thrill,adventure and satisfaction comes next.

Why you hate to see an 18 year old filipina with a 60 year old stable person from somewhere? Do u think you love your wife really? Do you stick to a one woman man thing? Or mu sideline ka sa other female when your wife is out of your sight?

Trust me, it is not because you are a foreigner mao nga womanizer na sila. Even Filipinos, Thais, Chinese etc, most MALES are womanizer it is because of their nature. We cannot get contented with one relationship.

It's an over reaction on you to say that I hate seeing an 18 year old with a 60 year old foreigner.I am saying that because of the reality not of a personal hate against foreigners.Infact Filipina marrying foreigners are also gamble.They dont know what kind of husband they will have.

I say to you.Whoever your wife is,Malas gyud sya because you are not giving her all your love and respect.All men are subject to admire women other than our wife but if you really love you partner, you must know your limitations.if you are not contented with your relationship,I pity you.

The Good: increased revenues, livelihood options, more chances to showcase our beautiful islands

The Bad: sorry, i personally perfer lonely planet style touring, so i don't like "isolation tourism" (my term) where the tourists only see the resort they booked in or the places included in their travel company's itinerary.

The Ugly: abusive locals who see foreign tourists as moneybags to be taken advantage of.

balhin ta sa mga koreano ug koreana beh...no. 1 man gyud ni cla ron nga foreign tourists in terms of nationality.

i know daghan sab korean students dre cebu...

anybody share their thoughts and experiences? ky ako wala...i don't have a korean friend here.

Korean women are good tourist compare to their men.Koreans have the most number of expired visas and passport here in the philippines.

It's difficult for anyone who is visiting or adjusting to a new life in a different country. Many of the cultural patterns of your home country differ from those of your new host country, and those differences sometimes cause some stress. The stress builds up over time and in many cases accounts for the rude behaviors that have been mentioned in this thread. Having said that, both the visitor and local population can benefit from awareness of each others' cultural differences.

I enjoy living here, but I must admit that there are certain aspects of life here that cause stress: Undisciplined drivers and pedestrians, people cutting in line in front of me (when there is no "number system" in place), HUGE potholes in the street, non-functioning traffic signals, recklessly-driven jeepneys and trucks billowing black smoke. I mention these criticisms CONSTRUCTIVELY, not as an attack. Dealing with all of these annoyances on a daily basis can create stress, even after living here more than 5 years. Bad roads and smoking vehicles are not a part of Filipino culture; however, it appears that the practice of cutting in line is. Although routinely tolerated here, "cutting" is considered offensive and in many countries will provoke a violent reaction. Increased tourism is good, but cultural awareness is as important for the host as it is for the visitor. Let's learn from each other...

The good -- More income for Cebu and at the same time, Cebu is getting more international exposure. We all know Cebu is way, way better than Manila.

The bad -- Possibility of TNTs.hehe. (makabawi na pud ta)

The ugly -- Many Cebuanos pretend that they are foreigners too or they came from abroad.
