Unless im entirely mistaken, those cards give next to zero performance improvements during rendering.. specially in 3ds max.. but i think it goes the same with those other 2d applications.
My recommendation would be a 7300GT-DDR3 256Mb or an HD3850 512Mb, depends on your budget.

4gb of ram is dirt cheap these days.. 3,800 for a 4Gb kit from team brand.
