as wat i've heard or read over the internet (ok, di kau reliable ang source hehe) purgatory was sort of a scheme used by the roman catholic church in olden times to sell this thing called "indulgence" (in·dul·gence - Roman Catholic Church. a partial remission of the temporal punishment, esp. purgatorial atonement, that is still due for a sin or sins after absolution. -dictionary.com). They were written in some special paper or scrolls of parchment signed by the pope during their time and says something like "if u buy this you will be spared a hundred years in purgatory" or something like that. The more you buy, the less time you stay in purgatory. They sell it to the kings, queens, and prominent people of their time or most commonly known as "the rich and famous".
