I believe that the bishops have not done enough in attending to the morals of their flock. In the matter of illegal gambling, for example, I have never heard any one of them or their priests preaching to the faithful that engaging in illegal gambling is, in fact, engaging in the devil’s work.

The same thing goes with bribery and extortion because these are works of evil as well. The problem is that the bishops sometimes even condone the participation of the poor in illegal gambling, bribery, extortion and even stealing -- after all, they are poor and deprived. To the middle class, the bishops do not preach the absolutes of honesty and integrity. Instead, the flock learns how to compromise because everybody else is supposed to be corrupt.

I have never heard a sermon about the hard-line view that the buck stops with “me,� the individual. It is we, the individual citizens, who can squeeze corruption out of our system if only we refuse to give a bribe or to submit to petty and large-scale extortion. The problem is that our religious leaders have not emphasized enough to us that righteousness and eradicating corruption have also a “price.� At times, this means falling in line in a government office; or waiting for the light to turn green before moving on; or losing a bid because you didn’t bribe the officials who mattered.

Our people have to hear from the moral leaders, in very strong words that government corruption is evil; yes, that souls go to hell because of bribery, extortion and corruption. Anything short of those words will not do us any good because our people will not realize the urgency and gravity of the situation.

Akong na observe lang kay ang CATHOLIC CHURCH ra man sa PILIPINAS ang complicated kaayo . Ive seen the CATHJOLIC COMMUNITY sa NORTH and SOUTH AMERICA and some in ASIA though not in EUROPE . ANg Philippines ra gyud ang naay issues regarding sa CHURCH , its the people ha dili ang religion . Too much BUSINESS and POLITICS is going on .

i think the main issue here is how the Catholic Church in the Philippines try to maneuver politics like it's in their own hands. they try to blur the line that separates church and government. obviously, the Church's part on influencing people to not embrace corruption is not sufficient enough to be able to see some positive results. IMO, the Church should focus on its own doctrines and let the government do their jobs.

Akong na observe lang kay ang CATHOLIC CHURCH ra man sa PILIPINAS ang complicated kaayo . Ive seen the CATHJOLIC COMMUNITY sa NORTH and SOUTH AMERICA and some in ASIA though not in EUROPE . the way i see it, too much influence ra kau ang church sa atoa politics (adds to more political noise), in comparison sa US ky klaro jud ug naay clear boundary between church and state did2...maypa mo-step aside sa sila and ad2 i-focus more ila time sa charity & other missionary works.

on the other hand, it's also dat politicians could take advantage of the church to gain more power & influence (i.e. visible kau ug kasal, bunyag, lubong) which is usually our practice since the old days pa.

if naay term nga "narco-politics", naa pud cguro "catholi-politics". hehe

Sa CEBU alone bai ... CARDINAL VIDAL is 2007 most INFLUENTIAL person ... isnt it supposed to be Gov Gwen Garcia logically ?

Philippines is composed of at least 80% ?? in population na Katoliko , its just a norm of the politicians to grab the oppurtunity and take advantage of the influence and services of the " LEADERS " of the " FLOCK " .

Nakadaot lang sa LEADERS of the FLOCK , wala sila nagpagamit ... sila mismo ang ni STEP IN !
